“You heard?” His father’s gravely voice spoke clearly across the line.

“I’ve just been assigned her security. What happened? I thought she was happily married?” Last Archie heard anyway. She made everything seem fine over the weekend. Why didn’t she tell him she’d gotten a divorce?

“She’d been fighting with him for months, son. That bastard had his claws in deep. We had to play dirty to dig up enough to get her out. It wasn’t pretty, and it still doesn’t seem to be over. He’s pissed, and he still has connections.”

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?” She was his best friend.

Didn’t they know he would want to know if something was wrong? This was serious.

“Arch, you’ve barely been home. When you got out, you never wanted to come around, and you didn’t want to patch in. The club was involved. What were we supposed to think?” His dad’s voice rose slightly.

“It’s not about me though. This is about Tabitha.” He ran his hand through the short amount of hair at the top of his head.

“She didn’t want you to know.” His father admitted.

He froze. “What?” They never kept secrets from each other.

Sure, they’re not as close as they once were. The big stuff mattered though. He should’ve been one of the first to know something was going on in the first place.

“What do you want to do, son?”

He wanted to demand answers. He wanted to show up on her doorstep and figure out what went wrong. He wanted to take care of her. Protect her. Keep her.

“I wouldn’t let anyone else have this assignment if they asked.” That was the truth. Clearly, she needed more help than she would ask for and he was just the person to give it.

“If you need anything.” His father paused.

“I know.”

The call ended as quickly as it started, and Archie made his way back inside. Tyler didn’t say a word as he sat back down at the computer to look over the details again. He got halfway through and had to look away. His hands were fisted at his sides and ready to rip her ex apart.

All he could see was red. When he got his hands on the asshole, and he would, he was going to put an end to him. Archie already disliked the guy for being with Tabitha. Then he had to go and ruin it. He didn’t deserve to breathe the same air as her. He didn’t deserve to breathe, period.

“Tell her agent I want to start immediately. I’m sure they only requested tomorrow, as if we needed time to sort things out.” Archie clicked the monitor off and stood.

Tyler eyed him cautiously. “I know you don’t enjoy sitting around, but what’s going on?”

Archie sighed and closed his eyes. “I know her.”

“Is this going to be an issue?” Tyler leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms.

“No.” He shook his head.

“You know the rules. This is a new business and we need to keep things professional.” Tyler shook his head. “I know that look. Promise me it won’t be an issue.”

Archie knew the last thing he needed to do was make a move. She needed help, and he wasn’t going to leave it up to anyone else. “It won’t be an issue.”

Tyler slowly nodded. “Fine.” He leaned forward and grabbed his phone. “I’ll let them know you’ll be there this afternoon. It should take you a few hours to get there and maybe an hour to pack up whatever you need.”

He nodded. “Perfect.”

It took him ten minutes to pack up a bag and two and a half hours to get to the gate of the neighborhood she lived in. It would’ve taken more, but he couldn’t help but speed part of the way. Images of something happening to her on his way kept flooding him.

“ID?” The security officer stood outside his truck window.

Archie passed it to him, then looked at the old cameras attached to the side of the security building. It wasn’t good enough.

“Ah, I’ve heard about you.” He passed him his ID back. “If you need anything.”
