She knew realistically; she was allowed to have off days. A lot had happened lately that only aided her in getting to that moment of darkness that she didn’t think she could crawl out of. Then she thought she needed her best friend, but she didn’t want to have to need him.

Once she was dressed and looking somewhat human again, she grabbed a bottle of water from the mini fridge and chugged it before digging through her bag for a protein bar. She just needed to get a little something in her stomach before she went downstairs and was around others.

After she threw the wrapper in the trash, she moved to her phone to respond to her messages. She let Max know she was okay. She told Cristina the video call for next week sounded good but to email her the details of the company so she could prepare.

One step at a time.

The silence that greeted her downstairs was eerie.

“Hey.” Archie stood abruptly and closed his laptop. “Are you hungry? There’s some leftover lasagna from last night.”

She nodded, then followed him to the oversize kitchen.

“Want to talk about it?” He spoke softly as he pulled out a plate for her.

Tabitha took in a deep breath and slowly exhaled. “I got overwhelmed.”

“Makes sense.” He put food on her plate, then placed it in the microwave before returning the rest of the tray to the fridge.

“I get in these moods sometimes. It’s difficult to explain. I just feel stuck. I used to take medication for it, but Ry-.” She stopped. “I should probably see a professional.” She closed her eyes.

“Whatever you want to do. I support you.”

“The things I told you.” She walked closer and placed her hand on his forearm. “I haven’t told anyone everything, not like you.”

He brushed a piece of her wet hair behind her ear. “We’re best friends first. You know you can tell me anything and I will always be here for you.”

She nodded and leaned into his touch before being pulled into his arms. Her body instantly relaxed, as if his shoulders were strong enough to take the weight from her own.

“I just want things to get to normal, whatever the new normal looks like.”

He lifted her chin slowly, looking down into her eyes. “We’re going to get there.” His eyes dipped to her lips, then back to her eyes.

She wanted to kiss him. She wanted to forget just for a moment. She wanted to pretend that she was just a girl, and he was just a boy that didn’t have a war going on around them.

So she slowly slid her hand up his chest, her fingers dancing across his hard muscles before crossing over his large shoulders. Her other hand trailed up the other side until both hands were rising along the back of his neck as she lifted onto her toes.

His forehead rested against hers. “Fuck, Tab, the things you do to me.” He quickly lifted her, her legs wrapped around his waist. “I meant it when I said we’re best friends, but I also meant it when I said you’re mine.” His hands squeezed where they’d been gripping her ass.

She could feel him hardening against her. The thin shorts doing nothing to hide the feeling of him pressing against her. He rocked into her. She gasped out as his lips moved to her jaw then neck, nibbling and kissing up and down.

Didn’t he know?

She wanted to be his. She wanted to be consumed by him.

He was hers too.

Tabitha always knew his lips would feel good. This was the second time she felt them on her body. The warmth spread across every part of her he touched. It flooded her and made her want nothing more than to spend eternity right here in his arms.

Finally, his lips were on hers and it was like fireworks were shooting behind her eyes. One minute she was in his arms, the next her back was being pressed against a wall as he rocked into her.

Any minute someone could walk through that door and the feeling of being caught turned her on more than it should have. The idea of this secret being revealed turned her on even more. She wanted everyone to know she was his, and he was hers.

“Wait.” He pulled back to gaze into her eyes. “This changes things. We’re done fighting this.”

She nodded. “You said I was yours, but that means you’re mine too.”

“You and me.” He half-smiled, but his eyes practically sparkled.
