“Was she always into this stuff?”

He looked at his friend. “Yeah. She wouldn’t admit it to many of the kids in school, but her comic collection was serious business. To this day, I’m pretty sure there are ones that she left in plastic wrap because they were special editions or some shit.”

Tyler laughed. “That’s awesome.”

“Don’t even get me started on the times she made us go to midnight showings at the theater.” Archie closed his eyes. He could picture those memories so easily.

“That’s not so bad,” Tyler argued.

“In costume.” Archie shook his head. “I mean, full costume, and we had to get there at least five hours early.” He laughed. “One of the last ones we went to was one of the Harry Potter films. I only saw them because she liked them. She made me wear a robe with her.”

“I would pay money to see that.” Tyler bent over laughing.

“I’m pretty sure her parents have a picture.” He rolled his eyes. “Fucking nerds.”

He’d do it all over again though. Those were the moments that Tabitha was most herself. She was in her element and got excited. Not a fake smile like would give others growing up. He’d suffer through costumes and matching shirts as she promised they wouldn’t be the only ones, and they usually weren’t. If she asked him to take her to the movies, the comic book store, or wait hours for a release for some game, he did it. Because it was her.

His eyes moved to the screen, where she was dramatically telling a story. A real smile on her face. These were her friends. This was exactly where she was meant to be. He didn’t fit in with this environment, and that was okay. He would protect her and keep her safe until she didn’t need him as a bodyguard any longer. It was his job and all he had.

CHAPTER29

TABITHA

The beat dropped, and she turned her head. She slowly leaned in until her lips were an inch from Luke’s before the beat dropped and they both looked away. Another beat and she was staring at the camera with a smirk as his eyes were on her.

“Ah, that’s so good!” Jill shouted from the other side of the lights.

Luke moved to take his phone from the stand and watched it back. “The perfect tease.” He looked up at her with a smile. “Want to see?”

“Yeah.” She nodded as she walked closer and played back the clip.

It was definitely flirty, which is what he wanted to go for. The brand’s neon sign was displayed in the corner in the background. The perfect product placement, advertising their new line of costumes coming out soon.

“Did you have something in mind for yours?” He placed his phone down on the table next to the main light.

“Yeah.” She grabbed her phone and flipped through to her notes to show him. “What do you think?”

“I love it! Let’s do it.” He moved back into place as she set everything up for the next one.

“Want me to flip it and record for you?” Jill was still standing on the other side of the light.

“That would be perfect because then I have another idea in mind to do with you.” Tabitha smiled as she moved to stand behind Luke.

“Awesome! And count down now.” Jill spoke softly.

As the words came across, she would pop out from behind Luke before hiding behind him again. She messed up on the last one and she saved it for the bloopers and they got it set to go again.

She repeated the motions. This time Luke leaned into it a little more. On the last one, he grabbed her and dipped her. Her eyes flew open and the clip ended.

“Yaaas!” Rebecca cheered from the other side of the room. “Jill, we should do that same one to post after them.” Both girls laughed.

The organizer had set up three main recording areas with the brand easily being promoted in the background. The group of them had been rotating for most of the day to use each set and collab with each other.

Tabitha quickly forwarded the files to her email to backup later then moved to the kitchen for a snack break. Max was standing at the counter already pulling out a veggie, chip, and dip tray.

“Whoever was in charge of the kitchen did a fantastic job!” He closed the fridge, then peeled the cover off of the tray.

She nodded in agreement. Between the catered dinner and brunch, they were definitely being spoiled. Not to mention the endless supply of drinks and snacks on hand. She wasn’t much of a drinker when it came to work trips like this. Every now and then she would indulge in one, but she wanted to keep things mostly professional. Max was the only one here who’d seen her drunk, but their friendship had grown outside of the work environment.
