“That’s what I thought.” He pulled her along faster.

Tabitha did her best not to trip over her feet as he pulled her around the corner. She wanted to warn Archie, but there was nothing she could do. They walked up to a large man standing in front of an elevator.

His huge arms were crossed over his equally large chest. His eyes narrowed on her for all of two seconds before he turned his attention to Ryan.

“I have a meeting.” Ryan told him.

What kind of meeting?

The man stepped to the side and pushed the button. The elevator opened immediately. Ryan practically shoved her inside. She watched as the doors closed.

“Where are we going?”

“The basement.” He backed her into the wall.

“Why am I here?”

He chuckled. “I have a meeting, and now you’re part of things. I didn’t think I would have the chance. They’ve been around you nonstop for months.”

“Whatever you think you’re going to get away with,” she shoved him away from her. “You’re not.”

“We’re just getting started.” He turned his attention to the doors.

As soon as they were open, she would find a way to make a run for it. If she could get away and get to Archie, she could let him know Ryan had people here too. There was a chance he made it up, but he needed to know, just in case.

The elevator slowed and dinged right before the doors opened. She didn’t know what she was expecting from the basement to this place. Maybe storage or a hidden parking garage. The sights and smells took over. Everything was dark and moody, with dim lights and sultry music playing softly. The smoke rolled across the floor like a bad music video. What the hell was going on?

Ryan put his arm around her shoulder and pulled her further into the room. “Welcome to the sin room.”

She continued to look around and take everything in. Women in sheer short dresses were carrying trays of drinks. Tables were scattered, with mostly men sitting at them. Card games and conversations over cigars and drinks.

A stage was toward one side of the room. Small platforms were spread with poles in the middle where women danced. A couple of cages were on the wall opposite the stage, sectioning off the bar. The cages had more women in them dancing.

“I didn’t know you were bringing an offering.” A man walked up to them.

“Surprise.” Ryan squeezed her arm.

“I hope you don’t mind if I sample the merchandise.” He looked her up and down, and it made her skin crawl.

“Not all.” Her ex practically shoved her in the man’s arms.

“No!” She didn’t agree with this at all.

“I’m afraid you don’t have a say down here.” He pulled her against him. “She smells divine.”

“Enjoy.” Ryan glanced at her. “I’ll be at the bar.”

“Let me go!” She shoved at the man. “You don’t know who you’re messing with.”

Her eyes scanned the room. Why wasn’t anyone helping? Nobody was even looking at her. What kind of place was this? She screamed and continued to try and break free from his grasp as he pulled her further into this room.

CHAPTER38

ARCHIE

“What do you mean, you don’t have eyes on them?” His jaw clenched.

His eyes were searching everywhere as he moved down the hall. He didn’t need to turn around to know James was following him.
