“This ends tonight.” Archie spoke as the doors closed around them.

Eight men stood armed and ready as the elevator moved down to the lowest level. They didn’t know what they would be walking into. The elevators appeared to slow down as they approached. Time with it.

Archie took in a deep breath as the ding came and the doors slowly revealed the basement. It wasn’t what he was expecting; it was more of a secret party. He knew the truth, illegal business was taking place.

A scream sounded, and the blood drained from his face. He took off in a run as he heard her shout. He didn’t need to look behind him to know the others were following. Chaos erupted.

CHAPTER39

TABITHA

She wasn’t prepared for this. Her gorgeous dress was form fitting and didn’t leave much wiggle room. Her shoes were beautiful but not meant for running. It was then she remembered the pin keeping her tiny hat in place. It was meant to be a statement piece.

She was about to make a fucking statement alright.

With her free hand, she reached up to grab the pin. She carefully slid it out, then reached back and poked the man with it.

“Bitch!” He pulled back to rub his arm.

Tabitha knew this was her chance. She ran out of the small room he’d carried her to and crashed right into another set of arms.

“Let me go.” She attempted to poke whoever grabbed her with the pin, but his hands gripped hers.

“I’ve had enough from you.” Ryan’s voice spoke near her ear.

He hit her arm against the wall, causing her to drop the pin, then pulled her against him and started backing out of the room. She screamed and attempted to break free from his grasp.

“Let her go, Ryan!” Her eyes flew up to see Archie pointing a gun.

Ryan laughed. “I don’t think I will. She’s my ticket out of here now.”

“FBI.” A stranger stepped forward. “You’re outnumbered, boy. Let her go.”

Tabitha wanted to breathe a sigh of relief as more guns were pointed at Ryan. There was no telling why even the FBI was here. All around the room, hands were going up. This had to have been some major undercover thing happening. Wrong time and wrong place for her. She swallowed as reality sunk in.

This would never be over.

Ryan would never stop fighting. It wasn’t in him. His family knew too many people and had the money to make things happen. She’d been a fool for thinking her life was going to get better after the divorce.

“I don’t think so. If I’m going down, she’s going down with me.” His voice grew shaky. “It’s only fair. She stole from me!”

His arm tightened around her as he reached back. She felt something cold press to her head, and she closed her eyes. How the fuck did he end up with a gun?

“Ryan, please.” She begged for the first time. Never in her life had she felt so helpless with him. Torturing her and using her, sure. This was about a life now, hers.

She wouldn’t go down without a fight. She pulled her foot up and slammed the heel of her shoes on his foot. It was just enough for him to loosen his grip and she twisted slightly elbow him in the gut. She broke away and shots were fired.

Time seemed to move slower, like in one of those crazy action scenes in the superhero movies she loved. This was the moment she knew everything would change. She glanced over to see Ryan had been shot. He was looking at her with cold eyes as he lifted the gun.

Only it wasn’t pointing at her, it was pointed at Archie. She quickly sprung into action, and time caught up with her.

“No!” She jumped in the way.

More shots were fired. It was like it was coming from all over the room. Screaming and shouts and more shots. They fell to the ground, and she glanced back at Archie. His eyes were wide, but she didn’t see any blood.

She felt Ryan go lifeless under her. It was finally over. The adrenaline wore off and she felt it, the pain. She watched as Archie ran to her.

“You’re okay. I saved you this time.” She smiled at him.
