I couldn’t think of an adjective other than nice to describe him.

When I yawned, Phil rubbed his hand along my back and surprised me again. “Why don’t you head off to bed? You’ve had a long day.”

“Oh. You sure?” He must have seen the surprise in my gaze because he smiled and stood, nodding a goodnight to Craig and Sam. “Um…”

“Ally, I don’t think we’re meant for each other. You’re nice and all, and I could see myself having a future with you, but I don’t like competing, or being a third wheel. I’ll head off first thing tomorrow.” He turned and walked away, not even giving me a chance to respond. He didn’t pause in his journey up the guesthouse steps and in the door. I opened my mouth, thinking I should say something to him, but then I realized I didn’t care enough to stop him.

So instead of calling out to him, I tugged my blanket tighter around my shoulders and walked around the fire. I didn’t even need to say a word. Sam and Craig shifted, opening more space between them and I sat down. “I just got dumped.”

“He didn’t deserve you anyway.” Craig wrapped an arm around me, pulling me close. Sam leaned in too, rubbing his hand down my back. I wasn’t an idiot. I knew Phil had meant that he didn’t want to be in competition with Sam and Craig. If only he was. If only they showed more than brotherly love for me. It was ironic that Phil had just broken up with me because of them. In reality, they weren’t even playing on the same cricket pitch as me. Hell, we weren’t even playing the same sport.

At least being single meant that I didn’t need to worry about blokes getting their nose out of joint because of my friendship with them.

Now all I needed to do was remember that they were out of reach.
