I’m late to the party, Phoenix is already here, and I wanted to make sure we arrived together, but I had football practice first. Walking through the side gate to the back yard, I see my usual group of friends off to one side. They are joking around pushing each other. As I approach them, I notice that one person is missing.

“Where is Phe?” I ask as I grab a can of coke from the cooler. I know they usually hate it when she hangs out with us, but I can’t help this protective streak I have when it comes to her.

Morgan shrugs at me and tilts his head to the other side of the yard. “She was over there like half an hour ago, but then Chelsea showed up, said something to her, and Phoenix just walked off. I haven’t seen her since.”

Chelsea has become a thorn in my side lately. Always hugging me and trying to get me to hold her hand. It was a problem, especially since I found out she’s been making fun of Phe. If Chelsea spoke to Phe, then I knew it couldn’t have been good.

I headed off to find her, but I wasn’t really worried. My Phe could hold her own. She was probably inside with the rest of the kids from school.

Muffled voices came from the pool area around the other side of the house. I couldn’t really make out what was said, but I did recognize one voice. As I approached, I could make out two people, their heads so close together, anger and hurt lashed through my body.

I watched from the shadows as they drew closer to one another. Just as they were about to kiss, I let myself be known.

“Phe? Kyle?”

“Yo, Logan. You okay there, man?” Stryker asks, patting me on the shoulder as he walks past. Out of all the boys, he and I are the closest. We tell each other everything. There are no secrets between us; he knows me inside and out. Judging by the concern in his eyes now, I must have spaced out there for a bit.

“Huh … what do you think, man?” I sneer. I don’t mean to take this cluster fuck out on him, but I have no idea how to process what my parents just told me. It’s irrational of me, I know, but I can’t help it. This new revelation has thrown a spanner in the works, and the memory I just had has me twisted up inside. “She only got in last night, and already she is out there with some guy. Seriously, what were they thinking?”

Just thinking about her out there with some rando leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Anger and hate aren’t the only emotions lingering deep inside me but calling it confusion would be an understatement. I need to get a hold of these new emotions—and fast.

“Man, I know what you’re saying, the situation sucks, and you’ve been planning since you found out she was coming. She threw us a curveball, but we can handle it,” Caden says with a devious smile that almost matches Stryker’s. “Look at it this way, brother. She’s not home right now. This gives us the opportunity and time to go through her stuff and find some sort of weakness, something we can use against her.”

Walking toward us, Ricky hangs his arm over my shoulder and moves me toward the door. “Come on, boys, let’s go see what we can find. Plus, I wanna see what this bitch looks like.”
