“Because you’ll freak out, and I’ll have to deal with you all night when all I want to do is be inside you.”

She folds her arms beneath her chest, tilting her head to the side while raising her brows. “So, you don’t want me to face my fears of swans so you can fuck me like crazy tonight?”

“Exactly.”

“What if I face my fear, and it’s the most thrilling experience, and tonight, when we’re alone, the adrenaline runs through me, and all I want to do are dirty things to you. Things you never imagined possible.”

I release a huff, then purse my lips. “Fine. Go hang out with the swan.”

“I wasn’t going to hang out with it.” She rolls her eyes with a sigh. “Just hover near it with caution.”

Jessa takes a deep breath as I push Bentley along. We move toward the lake, where the swan swims gracefully while minding its own business.

“Bird-ee,” Bentley calls.

I bend down to his level. “It’s a swan, Bentley, and Mama is trying to prove she’s Wonder Woman, but we both know she’ll need a Xanax this afternoon.”

Jessa turns to me with an annoyed expression. “You’re not helping.”

“I’m sorry.” I grin, then tug on her jacket. “Carry on.”

I hear her chant as the swan swims closer.“You can do this Jessa, just breathe.”

“Are you okay?”

“It’s… it’s getting closer,” she panics. “Wh… why are the eyes red? Oh God, is it from the blood of humans it consumes?”

I grab her hand, holding it tight. “You’re going to be okay.”

“How do you know?”

I lean over and kiss the top of her head. “Because I’ll never leave your side.”

The swan moves closer, but Jessa stills her breathing to turn to me with a smile as I take Bentley out of his stroller and carry him in my arms.

“The both of you. It’s a package deal, right? Buy one, get the kid free?” I joke.

Jessa stands on her tiptoes to place a kiss on my lips. Her lips are warm despite the cold, but she looks more beautiful than ever.

“This is how the ending goes, Andy.”

“Your journal,” I breathe.

“You read all my thoughts, fears, and desires,” she says with her gaze fixated on me. “You sure you still want us?”

Snow begins to fall from the sky, delicate with its entrance but perfect with its timing.

The beginning of a new season.

“More than anything else in the world,” I tell her, then tilt my head to focus on Bentley. “What about you? Are you okay with me being around?”

Bentley touches my cheek with his chubby palm, then places his mouth on my nose to kiss it with his mouth entirely open.

“And-ee…” he says again. “Dada And-ee.”

And in the eyes of a toddler, my entire life changed.

An instant family, a son, and a new destiny.
