I knock into his side. “I’m just trying to get you to see where he’s coming from and not focus on the ideology of him busting your ass for no reason.”

“I know, I know,” he mumbles.

Our arms rest on the railing as we quietly watch the ocean’s waves crash onto the shore. The sound is calming, despite the noise coming from inside the house.

“Anyway, what I was going to tell you is that I told my parents we’re going to be roomies.”

Cruz leans back, tilting his head with a stiff glance. “And I’m still alive?”

I chuckle softly. “My dad isn’t that bad.”

“Um, yes, he is.” He nods with wide eyes. “And?”

“And nothing. We’re adults, though your behavior can be questionable at times.”

He digs his finger into my ribs, something he often does to annoy me because he knows I’m ticklish.

“Seriously, Addy. What did he say?”

“He trusts me, knows we’re best friends, and that’s it. If I was moving in with a love interest, I’m sure the reaction would’ve been different,” I tell him honestly. “But you know I’m not like that.”

Cruz shifts his gaze back onto the ocean with a smirk on his face. “Of course, Addison Edwards never falls in love.”

“I’m not a robot,” I inform him with slight annoyance. “What’s wrong with me being single anyway?”

“You’re not getting laid?”

“Yeah, well…”

“Though the offer still stands,” he reminds me with a playful grin.

“Friends with benefits is the worst invention ever. Everybody knows it backfires because of jealousy or someone catches feelings while the other person is completely oblivious.”

Cruz rolls his eyes at me. About a year ago, he went through a friends-with-benefits stage, which ended up exactly how I just said. He was oblivious, and the girl fell in love with him to then stalk him like a crazed maniac. He can roll his eyes all he wants, but the truth is he knows I’m right.

“Look, do me a favor and just stay single. It makes my life easier.”

“Selfish much?”

“You just said what’s wrong with being single? Nothing, Addy. So, you’re not getting laid, big deal. That’s why you’ve got five fingers, right?”

“Ten, actually,” I correct him.

He glances sideways with a smirk. “Wow, aren’t you talented? You must get off really quick.”

A groan escapes me. “I’m going inside, you know, to mingle with people.”

Cruz doesn’t say another word, staying still while I walk inside and find a group of girls I attend classes with. The conversation begins with everyone complaining about our last paper to who’s screwing who at this party.

“So, what’s the deal with you and Cruz anyway?” Cherie, a ginger-haired girl, asks.

“Uh, nothing,” I tell her and the other girls. “We’re best friends, that’s it.”

“Then you don’t care if I make a move?”

“Be my guest. He’s not seeing anyone if that helps.”

Cherie giggles, slapping my arm playfully. “Like I’d care if he was.”
