“I can’t think of anything better,” he mutters.

Cruz heads straight for his room when we get home, given his early morning training session. I’m not in the mood to unpack, so I take a long steaming hot shower and place my favorite PJs on. Given it’s our first night here, it would’ve been fun to celebrate and not have him sulk in his room like a spoiled brat but say he needs to sleep for training.

Compared to my last apartment, my room is slightly smaller. There’s my queen-size bed in the middle with a bedside table on each side. My favorite mint green sheets always calm me. Something about the color is therapeutic.

The room has a small walk-in closet attached with drawers plus a small nook for my desk. All my other possessions, such as my books, are crammed in the corner until I figure out how to arrange it all.

I sit in bed and throw the comforter on top of me when my phone begins to ring. Closing my eyes for a brief moment, I take the deepest of breaths before hitting accept.

“Sister,” I simply answer.

“So, any news to tell me?” Ava questions oddly.

“Um, no… I’m sitting here doing nothing.”

Ava expels a loud breath. “About tonight.”

“Tonight?”

“Dinner at the Coopers.”

I scratch my head with confusion. “Yes, I had dinner at the Coopers.”

“Oh my God, woman,” Ava blurts out. “Did you tell the boys about how we know Haden is pierced?”

My head flinches back slightly, wondering how on earth she knew it came up over dinner.

“How did you know?”

“Masen.”

The sound of his name stirs something odd within me again. I swallow the lump inside my throat but then remember my silence will pique Ava’s curiosity.

“It was an accident.”

“How does Haden’s pierced dick come up by accident?”

My eyebrows squish together, trying to think of an excuse rather than admit my stupid mouth blurted it out. But, of course, I come up with nothing.

“Wait a minute,” I interrupt, tilting my head in confusion. “Why would Masen tell you this? Did he just randomly call you to tell you we had dinner, and his dad’s penis came up?”

“He texted me. And Addy, penis is such an unsettling word.”

“Masen texted you?” I repeat as the temperature inside the room starts to rise. “So, you talk to him?”

“Well, duh. We were close for a long time.”

All of a sudden, so many questions come to mind. Fact, Ava is married. I know she loves Austin, but Masen is a notorious player. Are they having an affair?

“Does Austin know this?”

The sound of Ava inhaling is so loud it’s heard over the speaker.

“Yes, they also talk. You know, men and women can be friends without everyone thinking they’re sleeping together. Look at you and Cruz.”

Ava has a point, and it’s presumptuous of me to think she’s jeopardizing her marriage over some guy who has been in our family for years. And that’s the truth—he’s just someone we grew up with. He probably felt obliged to entertain tonight, or more factually—annoy me.

“You’re right, sorry.”
