“Who the hell do you think taught me? Now, out with you! Go on. Git.”

“Git?” He raised an eyebrow. “First of all, I am your partner. Second, never say the wordgitto me again. Third, I amnota dog.”

Gripping the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white, I ground out, “I don’t work with partners.”

Luca leaned over and pecked on the window, then motioned for me to roll it down. Before I could say a word, his eyes locked with the shifter in my car. “Keep me informed.”

“Yes, Alpha.”

And then Luca focused on me with molten chocolate eyes. “This is not over little wolf.”

This was a no-win situation. If I thought that I could physically remove the man from my passenger seat, I would’ve hurled his ass out the door. But the longer I waited, the more chance Fang had to kill and get away. I had to go now! Reversing out of the parking spot, I headed toward the fairgrounds.

How had so much changed in the last 24 hrs.? Not only that, but I also still wondered how Luca had found me? And how had he convinced Curt fucking Jackson to offer me up on a silver platter?

My mind strayed back to Luca and that kiss, the way it ignited and then set aflame my need to fuck him. But I knew that he and my wolf would be a huge problem.

Chapter 5

Ivy

The silence grew into an uncomfortable living being and it made me nervous. This shifter hadn’t spoken more than a handful of words to me. For all I knew, someone could have ordered this wolf to take me out the moment we were alone, somewhere without witnesses. It would be easy to say that Fang killed me, and then he could bury me in the park near the fairgrounds.

The thought did occur that maybe I spent too much time chasing bad people and not enough time with ordinary, everyday people. Kelly didn’t count. She could never be considered normal.

Energy crackled around my fingertips. I tried to squash it down. If somehow, I skated by without him finding out just how different I really was, it would be a miracle granted by God himself.

I was no longer able to take his silence. “Do you have a name, or should I keep calling you Mr. Broody?”

“I do not care what you call me,” he said with no inflection as he stared out the window.

“Ah, he speaks. And good to know. I’ve officially just changed your name toasshole.”

He snapped his head around and speared me with a sharp look, staring daggers at me.

I grinned. “This game again? You know you can’t win.” He might have rolled his eyes before he returned to staring out the window. Finally tired of the entire situation, I laid my cards on the table. “I don’t want a partner. I don’t need one. So, listen up, and listen carefully. Fang is mine so stay out of my way. Got it?”

Of course, he didn’t answer.

We’d been driving for about thirty minutes outside Brighten City before turning off the paved road and into a graveled parking lot. I maneuvered my car into a spot and cut the engine. Before getting out, I grabbed my wooden stake from the backseat and tucked it inside my hoodie pocket. Now I was ready.

Bright lights and music drew my attention, and the smell of popcorn, candy apples, hot dogs, and cotton candy. Kids laughed; a baby cried—someone could quickly go missing from this place.

My gaze sharpened with the help of my wolf. Trees lined the edge of the fairgrounds while a newly built wooden walkway curved around the park’s edge that bordered the carnival.

Heading toward the entrance, I paid my ten dollars and left theassholeto pay his own fee. Then, while begrudgingly waiting on him, I scanned every ride, every corner looking for lurking shadows.

Kids laughed as they ran past me. Cigarette smoke lingered in the air, making it hard to scent the vampire. Families walked from ride to ride, leaving me feeling a little melancholy and wishing I had parents growing up. Not for the first time, I wondered why they gave me up. Was it because I was mixed, and they were afraid they would get into trouble? Caroline had hidden me, so maybe they were just selfish, or they didn’t want a kid in the first place.

Stop it!I scolded myself. I was here to do a job, not to feel sorry for myself.

After ten minutes of walking silently through the fair, I spotted six people—three couples—as they disappeared into the woods with solo cups in hand. Laughing and talking, they were unaware of the danger lurking nearby. This fair, its location would be easy picking for Fang. I needed to find him, and fast.

The wind rustled my hair before shifting directions. That’s when I caught the scent of cigarette smoke and rotten eggs—vampire. The hair on my arms lifted in anticipation as my need for vengeance hummed through my body. The magic demanded justice for all the victims that Fang had killed.

Scanning the tree line, I spotted a gangly man standing on the west corner staring at the exact place the kids were heading into the woods. His red eyes gave off an eerie glow, his hands fisted at his sides.

My heart kicked up a notch. This was the first time I had laid eyes on Fang. Average height, slick, straight black hair ended an inch above his neck. His pale skin glistened under the moonlight. His lanky frame gave the impression of weakness, but those long fingers with sharp, claw-like talons screameddangerous.
