He growled—I laughed—we broke apart and took our seats.

Luca picked up a file and then asked Trace. “Are you sure?” His voice had transformed from heated to solemn.

“Yes. I tripled-checked it, Luca.” Trace said, lacing his fingers together.

Luca closed the file and leaned back in his chair. Somehow, I knew this was about me.

“As everyone knows, Ivy submitted to a blood analysis to determine her lineage.” He picked the file back up. “Trace has given me the results.”

So many feelings pulsed through my body. One, why the hell would he tell everyone? I mean, shouldn’t I know first and then decide who I wanted to let in on the big news? Who the hell was he to expose me to the guys? I was pissed! I guess now everyone gets to watch my reaction. Well, fuck him! I held my chin high and refused to show emotion.

“Ivy is closely related to Locklear and ….”

“The Councilman Locklear?” Axel asked.

“Yes,” Luca confirmed. “Half wolf shifter and half…unknown.” All eyes landed swiftly on me.

“What?”

“The fuck?”

“It can’t be!”

Everyone spoke so fast I didn’t know who said what. It took me a moment before the news sunk in. Unknown? How was that possible? I must have asked that aloud.

“I don’t know, love,” Luca said. “We thought every species had been cataloged, but apparently not.”

“So, what does that mean?” I asked, feeling vulnerable. “What kind of magic do I have?”

Luca studied me for a moment and then his lips curled up. “Ivy magic. It’s purely your own.”

“Ivy magic,” I murmured. “Then how the fuck do I use it?”

“We just keep trying,” Devon said.

My mind drifted back to the vampire. He said that I was the one his master was looking for. I think one of the whisperedforbidden. Did that mean that I shouldn’t be here? Or that mom and dad broke a sacred rule? Hmm…maybe…I looked around the table. Somehow, these wolves became important to me over the course of a week. For the first time in my life, I wanted to be a part of something. I wanted to let them in. Kelly knew everything about me, and she didn’t toss me aside as a freak. And being human, she had more reason than these guys sitting around the table with me.

“Soo…” I started slowly. Everyone quieted, looking at me. “One of the vampires I killed told me that I was the one his master was after, and I think he might have said that I was sort of…forbidden. I didn’t think much about it but now I wonder if it has to do with my magic.”

Trace drummed his fingers. I could tell that mind of his was rapidly processing all scenarios. “We could test your blood on a vampire. See what it does to him.”

“Good idea,” Luca said. “Rage, think you could round us up a volunteer?”

The same sinister grin spread across his face. “I think that can be arranged.”

“We have another problem,” Devon started. “How am I to help Ivy with her magic when we don’t know what kind it is?”

Rage studied me with an uncanniness that left me feeling unsettled. “I will take over her training.”

“The hell you will!” I spouted.

He laughed! The fucker actually laughed.

Rage pointed a finger at me. “That reaction right there is why I should train you. I bet I could easily pull your magic forward.”

I bet he could too. He would hurt me if he thought it would work. Or he would try. My wolf was stronger than his and she wouldn’t tolerate his aggression. But I, on the other hand, was scared to death of him.

“I agree,” Luca chimed in. “Rage, you can train Ivy during the afternoons. That way if you’re out chasing vampires all night, you’ll still get enough rest. Anything else?” His eyes briefly touched everyone. “Okay, don’t forget the pack run tonight at nine.”
