“Will the others be running with us?” Axel asked.

“They will.”

I didn’t miss the half grins of amusements or the smell of lust that permeated the air. What would happen on the pack run? Curious.

Chapter 19

Luca

My heart skipped several beats as I tried to hide my reaction.Unknown.Are you sure, Trace?I asked. My mind shuffled through everything I knew about Ivy. The way she could command complete obedience with her unearthly voice. In the library, she froze us in our tracks. And then Devon—he swore that Ivy healed him from a fatal vampire attack. I watched her heal Kelly in the alley.

Yes. I’m sure the unknown dual nature would explain her wolf’s color. I’ll keep researching, though.

And the councilman? What relation to him?I asked.

The DNA match is close enough to be his granddaughter.

I worked to keep my breathing regular, but this news could stir up enough people to want Ivy gone. My eyes slid to the beauty on my right. Caroline was right to worry about Ivy’s safety. At one point, I wanted to strangle the puma, but now I could hug her. She must have known how dangerous others would be to Ivy. Some would like to use her for her abilities, while others would want her eliminated. Did the councilman know that he had a granddaughter?

Terrified that someone would rip her away from us, my wolf pushed me to mate her sooner rather than later. The vampires already knew of her existence. In the beginning, they organized, checked the agents’ response times, and cataloged information on each of them. Did someone discover who she was? Or at least what kind of magic she possessed? They must have. Otherwise, Kelly wouldn’t have been attacked at the club. And two vampires waited for Ivy inside her apartment.

Shit!I felt like I needed to play catch-up.

I needed to speak with my team and ensure they understood that Ivy needed to be protected at all times. Especially if the vampires believed in that ridiculous prophecy about walking in sunlight. More than likely, if one of them tried to consume Ivy’s blood, it would kill them.

Exposing Ivy’s wolf on the pack run could be an issue, but if she didn’t show up, the others would notice. I dismissed everyone but Ivy. Taking her hand, I pulled her onto my lap and nodded at the others. They took the cue and left.

“Are you alright, love?” I asked while sweeping the loose hairs behind her ear.

“What does it mean, Luca? Trace can’t even pinpoint what I am. I can’t even wrap my head around that.”

“Tell me about this power. How does it feel inside you?” I was thankful that Ivy was beginning to trust me whether she admitted it to herself or not. “Tell me about that night we met at the bar.”

I rubbed tiny circles on her back to keep her from worrying too much. I needed her to relax as much as possible.

“I’d been hunting Fang,” I scoffed at the name. She grinned. “I know, stupid right?” I chuckled but agreed. “I got there too late. There was a dead college student but no signs of the fucker. There weren’t any clues either. So when I saw that dead girl, the need for…justice…built inside me. It feels like anxious energy that leaves me on edge because it has nowhere to go.”

“And Devon. What happened with him?”

She remained quiet while her mind shifted through the events of that night.

“I was so mad that fucking Jackson made me take a partner. I tried so hard to stay away from everyone, then boom, my world fractured.”

“My fault,” I said with amusement. “I forced Jackson into it. He called you Saskia. Imagine my surprise when you walked into the tavern.”

She snorted. “Mine too. Sorry about knocking you out that night. Normally my magic seeps away. I guess you amped it up.”

“Axel thought you had drugged me.”

“That’s why he acted like an asshole to me?” She shook her head when I nodded. “Okay, back to Devon. The vampire killed one of the humans in a matter of seconds. And then I heard him and Devon fighting. When I reached them, he had Devon in some sort of choke hold and was draining his blood. I panicked and ordered him to stop. And he did. He just stood there like a talking statue. That’s when he told me I was the one his master was after. I killed him.”

“And Devon?”

“He was dying. I got there too late.”

Her labored breathing told me she was reliving the moment.

“It’s okay, love. Devon is fine. But how did you feel when you thought he was dying?”
