As I ran, I sensed when Axel joined us. Luca now on my right side, and Devon joined on my left. Rage and Trace joined Axel behind us. My wolf threw her head back and howled with joy at finally being a part of a pack. Something she had missed for the last twenty-four years. The others howled with her.
Chapter 21
Luca
Mated. I sucked in a deep breath at the thought. I felt Ivy’s doubt and fear flowing through our newly formed bond. I’d hoped to gain her trust, affection, and finally, her consent to be my mate. However, my wolf’s carnal need pressed into my own. When Ivy snapped and growled at me, primal instinct took over and nothing would deter my wolf from claiming what was his.Ours. My wolf and I were one and the same for the most part. But where I wanted to wait and give her time, he sought to assert his dominance and take what he knew was his.
I’d never had sex in wolf form. Partly because my wolf wasn’t interested in anyone besides his fated mate. But as a man, wolves were very sexual and often engaged in sex with different partners. Unfortunately, fated mates were rare. So, many wolves dated, hoping to find compatibility and hopefully fall in love.
When Ivy challenged me, I knew it was to measure my worthiness. Her wolf wanted to test my dominance and I’d responded instinctively. But there were advantages to being mated. It would let me understand her needs, feel her emotions and help her navigate the shifter world.
The moment my teeth sunk into her shoulder, a band snapped in place. Her jumbled emotions confused me. Elation and fear did not go hand in hand.
Besides the bond tethering us together, she also snapped into pack existence. The others would know instantly what had happened. Ivy was the alpha female and could communicate with everyone. Could feel everyone if she chose to do so. I should have explained everything to her before this mating, but I hadn’t anticipated her wolf would be so eager.
As she took off, I fell in line behind her before taking my spot at her side, running with my mate for the first time as a mated pair. I called the others to join us as a pack. We ran for the next half hour before stopping by a stream for a drink. The others greeted Ivy’s wolf with their heads and tails down, showing respect. Sniffs and licks to the muzzle, they circled around. After the proper greeting, the wolves lazed around until it was time to head back.
Almost back to the clearing, Axel and I were ahead of everyone. Devon and Ivy had been wrestling in wolf form and had fallen behind. It had been a good full moon, but the sun would break across the sky in a couple of hours. I couldn’t wait to get Ivy into bed and sink my teeth into her neck while fucking her. Give her a proper mating while my wolf took the back seat.
When I stepped into the clearing behind the pack house, a small brown she wolf came bounding over. With her chest lowered to the ground, she presented her ass, tail high.Violet. Stunned that she presented herself for fucking in front of everyone and in wolf form, I gaped. Before the run, she’d told me that she accepted that we would never be mates and had asked me to forgive her forwardness toward Ivy. Yes, we’d fucked a few times, but things were different now.
Before I had time to register what was happening, my mate ran full force and tackled Violet. They rolled. Ivy clawed Violet’s underbelly, making her whine. Violet tried to crawl away, but Ivy would have none of it.
Ivy, you can’t kill her. Let her go.
You would like that, wouldn’t you? So you can fuck her again? That’s what you were thinking about.
No! Ivy, please love. Let’s talk about this in private. Let Violet go.
Violet…she hissed the word like a bad taste stuck in her mouth.
Ivy, it’s against shifter law to kill her without an official challenge. I can’t lose you. Think. What would The Agency do if they found out about an illegal killing?
She backed away from Violet, snarling and throwing out her alpha vibes. Every wolf present hit the ground. Whines and whimpers filled the air. Then, with her head and tail held high, Ivy swung her gaze to me, and I saw and felt the betrayal in her eyes. And then, she turned and trotted toward the pack house.
Alpha,Axel said, would you like me to handle this?
As much as I wanted to run after Ivy, her actions reflected on me, and I needed to be the one to defuse the situation. Soothe the other wolves.Thanks Axel, but I’ll take care of this personally.
Alpha,it was Rage speaking now.Let me handle your mate while you talk with the Black Hills Alpha.
Take it easy on her Rage. She’s confused and hurt. Remember, she’s never been part of a pack before. Everything is new and foreign.I wouldn’t tell him that she’s scared and angry, something that I caused. This was not how I planned on celebrating our first day as a mated pair.
Rage shifted, grabbed his clothes and headed for the packhouse.
I sent out soothing vibes, assuring the others that everything was okay. When I shifted, they all followed suit. Once dressed, I found the Black Hills Alpha, Ian Rhodes.
“Ian, thanks for coming tonight.”
He raised one eyebrow. “Thanks for the invite. It’s not every day you get to run with the regional alpha.”
I half-heartedly chuckled. “I suppose not.”
“Am I to assume that you found your fated mate?”
I rubbed the back of my neck. “Yes. Let’s just say she is not very happy with me right now.”
Ian burst into a fit of laughter. “A she wolf presenting her ass will do that. I’m surprised that your mate let her walk away. Mine would’ve killed her on sight.”
