“Ivy,” he started, but I didn’t want to hear it. Shaking my head, I got to my feet, then stepped to the side to go around him.Ivy, you will listen…
“No,” I said harshly. “You will not speak to me that way.” I didn’t want to hear his mind speak or whatever it was they called it. I was too intimate. When his voice invaded my head, it seeped into my soul and settled around my heart.
“Ivy, she means nothing to me.”
My shoulders stiffened. I slowly turned and glared. “A former fuck buddy?” When he said nothing, I had my answer. “You don’t want to be late for your meeting.” That might have been a low blow on my part. Everyone had history, a past, but when Luca intervened, he took her side. And Violet damn well knew it.
Leaving Luca alone in the training room, I sprinted for my—our—room. I needed to grab my shit and haul ass. Even if it only meant sleeping in a guest room. And I also needed my phone.
Ten missed messages.
Jackson: Times up. You’re back in service.
Jackson: Let me know when you get this.
Jackson: Vampires are gathering in masses. Target- Regional Alpha Pack House. No definite word on the time.
Jackson: I just got word. The Agency will be sending help. I’m not sure how many, but they will arrive tomorrow per their orders.
Kelly: Ivy, are you okay?
Jackson: Where the hell are you?
Kelly: Brian said there’s about to be a war between the vampires and shifters.
Kelly: Seriously, Ivy, I’ve called and texted you. I’m starting to worry.
Jackson: I’m giving you twenty more minutes and then I’m sending someone to check on you. For all I know, the vampires have already attacked. Shit, maybe ten minutes.
Kelly: Bitch, you got thirty minutes to send me a text or call. If I don’t hear from you, I’m going to activate the find my phone trace, steal a car, and bail you out of whatever fucked up mess you got yourself into!
A grin spread across my face. Kelly and I had tracking devices on our phones so we could find each other if one of us went missing. She didn’t know I had a new phone because my old one shattered when the vampire attacked her. A flashback of that event shot dread to my heart. The vampires, they were preparing to attack those I cared for. Luca, Devon, even Rage. I didn’t know Trace and was still on the fence about Axel, but they were pack. My wolf recognized them as hers.
To Kelly, I typed:I’m fine. You know nothing can stop me bitch. Seriously, stay away from here. I’ll be busy for the next couple of days.
And then I dialed up Jackson. He answered on the first ring.
“Saskia, where the hell have you been?”
“I heard about the attack from Luca,” I replied, ignoring his question. He knew exactly where I’d been and why.
He cleared his throat. “Fifteen agents will be there tomorrow morning. You are in charge since it’s your territory.”
“Thanks. What do you know about the vampires? How many can we expect?” Already in work mode, I plopped down on the chair and listened.
“The vampire councilman, Master Amare, got word that the shifters have something in their possession that could be a game changer. Give them the upper hand over all species. He is worried that his brother, Vlad, is hoping to obtain that possession and overthrow him on the council and declare himself ruler. Vlad has always wanted to lead not only vampires but everyone. He is somehow convinced other fashions to join with him and his cause. Master Amare is unsure how many vampires plan to attack, but he thinks it is somewhere around one hundred.”
One hundred,I swallowed hard.Fuck me!
“Fifteen agents,” I said. “That’s all The Agency can spare?”
“That’s it. They cannot risk any more than that.”
Losing more than fifteen would be unacceptable. That’s what he really said. The irony of working with so many shifters and agents after declaring myself a loner made me scoff. Oh, how the circumstances had shifted in such a short time. At least I knew I wouldn’t be put to death for merely existing.
“What do you want us to do?” I asked.
“Do what you do best. Gather all your weaponry and keep a positive attitude. Don’t forget Saskia. There will be shifters at your side as well.”
