“No, not this time. Left him back home." The man shifts. Carter peeks up to find him rubbing the back of his neck. "I’ll introduce you next month, if you're still coming to the summit?”

“Introduce me?” sir asks, this time fully shocked. “You plan on having him amonthfrom now?”

“Possibly.”

“Have you ever kept a slave past 30 days?”

“Once. A slave a few years back survived 34 days.”

Survived.

Is he saying he kills his slaves? Usually before 30 days is up?

Oh god, is this man one of those monsters that Nathan told Carter about?

F2d.

Fuck to death.

Carter’s stomach curls. He digs his fingers into the grass, trying to ground himself. Trying to keep from slipping out of the proper mindset.

There’s a long stretch of silence before sir’s shoes move in Carter’s peripheral vision. He gets closer to the man. His voice is low and quiet when he asks, “How long have you had him?"

“Nate-”

“How long?”

“Careful, my friend," the man says, his voice taking on the same tone. "I see the way you look at yours. Don't make judgements you don't want tossed back at you."

Carter glances back up in time to see sir's face harden. "I don't know what you're talking about. I'm doing my job."

“As am I. Let's respect that and move on."

Sir sighs, then nods. “You’re right. I trust you.”

“Good.” The man winks. “I’ll keep your secret, don’t you worry.”

“Asshole,” sir murmurs, but he's smirking reluctantly and his eyes are warm again.Shit, here they go again, getting chummy…

Carter wonders what his punishment would be if he punched this mystery man and told him that sir is his.

A man Carter doesn't recognize walks up then, with Todd Henley and Benny by his sides. Carter immediately curls in on himself, ducking his head low. They all begin to talk about the party, the guests, the current gossip. But it's not long before the men turn their attention to him. Henley first.

“I see you brought your naughty little pet tonight.”

“Itismy birthday. I'd prefer to use my own pet for it," sir says smoothly. "And he's not naughty. We've been working on his behavior. He's a very good boy now."

“He looks it,” the mystery man says. “May I?”

“Of course.”

The man squats down, keeping his knees from touching the grass. Carter tries to hold perfectly still for the inspection, but he startles when the man grabs his chin and tilts his face up and over. A hand settles in his hair, sir calming him with the touch. He doesn’t have to say anything. Carter can hear the unspoken order loud and clear.Be good. The stranger gives Carter a warm smile. “Hello there.”

Carter darts his eyes up at sir until sir nods. Then he looks back at the man and says in a polite voice that hopefully doesn’t show his overwhelming jealousy, “Hello, sir.”

“You’re a pretty little thing. Your master is lucky.”

“Thank you, sir.”
