“We’re just about to leave.” He’d sent him a message earlier telling him they were going to drive rather than fly. Then another message after talking to De Leon.

“Good. I know I don’t have to tell you to be careful. Just had an interesting phone call with Alejandro De Leon.”

“Fuck. I thought that might happen. What did he want?”

“A partnership. Of sorts.”

“What?” That wasn’t what he was expecting.

“Says that with our tighter connections it would be beneficial for us both. I explained that I had no interest in expansion. That I was looking to work less. But he said it didn’t have to be anything like that. Said something vague about how we could work out any details.”

“Fuck, Drew, I’m sorry. What do you think he wants?”

“Actually, what I think he really wants is to make sure that his family is looked after.”

“Maeve. By all accounts, he’s protective.”

“Yes, it wouldn’t really benefit him to have a partnership with me. I’m too small. And I can’t see him wanting to expand into Montana. But with Maeve here, I’m guessing he’d like some eyes and ears on the ground.”

“You think he wants to send some men to you?” Gray asked.

“Maybe. We’ll see what happens.”

“Fuck. I don’t have to bring her back there if it’s going to cause problems.” His gut tightened at the idea of leaving Markovich, though.

“Like fuck you won’t. This is the safest place for her and it’s your home. Bring her here. Besides, Dahlia is waiting to meet her. She’s knitting her something right now. I want to say it’s a sweater, but I’m really not sure.”

Oh, hell.

“And she’s already got one here waiting for you. You don’t want to disappoint her, do you?” There was a dark note of warning in Markovich’s voice.

Nope. He definitely did not want to disappoint Dahlia.

“All right, I’ll keep you updated along the way. Then once I get her safely there, I’m going to go hunting.”

“Thought so. Don’t worry, I’ll keep your girl safe while you go get this bastard who dared to hurt her.”

“You okay, baby? Your goodbyes took a while.”

She glanced over at Gray in surprise. “Yeah, I’m all right. Isaiah was a bit worried you were pushing me into leaving with him, and Abe had a few questions. I’ll miss them. But even though I’ll always have a place there, it doesn’t feel like my home, you know?”

He nodded, checking his rear view and side mirrors.

“Although I’m not sure that anywhere has ever felt like home.”

Reaching over, he took her hand in his, squeezing it lightly. “We’ll find your home.”

She studied his gorgeous profile until he turned to glance at her. “What is it?”

“Oh, I was just thinking that maybe my home isn’t a place. Maybe it’s a person.”

He stared at her before moving his gaze back to the road. “Girl, you can’t say things like that while I’m driving.”

“Why not? Are you getting hard, Daddy?”

“Maeve,” he said warningly. “You’re playing with fire.”
