“That obvious?”

“You damned alphas always need your pack,” she says with a grin.

“That’s a myth,” I say, “there’s no such thing as an alpha wolf and…” I stop as I realize she baited me into that. “Okay,” I say with a groan. “I take it back. I’m glad we never worked things out.”

She laughs and suddenly her arms are around me, her mouth is on mine, and her tongue slips into my mouth. The kiss is almost desperate, and I return it with the same desperation. Gradually, it diminishes in intensity and then ends. She pulls her mouth away, pecks me on the cheek, and says, “That was the one last time.”

And then it’s done.

“Now go spend the night with your girl,” she says.

And then it starts.

EPILOGUE: ABOUT THREE YEARS LATER

Klarice

I carry the tray of sliced tomatoes, leaves of lettuce, pickles, and cheese and I set it on the dining room table. Then I freeze. Through the sliding glass door, I see the two of them kissing. Val walks in carrying a tray of hamburger patties and says, “What’s wrong?”

I put a finger to my lips and nod to the door. She looks and chuckles. “You okay with this?” he asks.

“I don’t think we have a choice,” I reply.

“But I can still embarrass the hell out of them, right?” He doesn’t wait for an answer but strides forward, pulls the glass door open, and says, “Hey! Vince, Annie! She’s not eighteen until four-forty-three p.m. I swear to God if I see you kissing that minor child again, I’m going to break your legs!”

Annie turns bright red. From the living room, all the kids spill into the kitchen, dancing and yelling. Kaitlyn starts singing, “Vince and Annie sitting in a tree!”

Vince lifts Annie up, cradling her like a baby. “I’m going to take you away from all this,” he says.

Annie giggles and says, “Okay but after I open my presents.” Then, she stares pointedly at Val and turns her head to give Vince a kiss on the lips. I can’t help myself and I burst out laughing.

Val looks at me and says, “You’re not helping!”

Soon, the backyard is filled with the smell of hot dogs and burgers and the kids are running around in barely controlled chaos. Then we’re eating and enjoying everyone’s attempts to get more attention than anyone else. I look over at Val and realize he’s completely at home with the chaos and somehow, his presence makes it a hell of a lot less chaotic.

Later that night, as I move my body on top of him and his strong hands take hold of my ass so he can move me in sync with his thrusts, I think back to the man of my dreams. I remember all the fantasies and realize that fantasy man isn’t a part of my life anymore. From the moment Val arrived to help me with Annie’s ankle, he took over. I remember the first sight of Val, how I thought he was my fantasy man come to life.

As my orgasm hits and I cry out his name, I realize how wrong I was. Val isn’t that fantasy man of my dreams. Val is so much better.
