I blinked, fighting back a grin. “Not this weekend.”

“Do you love Wolfgang?” he pressed.

“No.” Honest truth there. I wasn’t even sure if I lusted after him anymore. I’d find out that answer tomorrow night. “He’s just a friend.”

“Like how Doc is yourfriend?” Addy asked.

Not really. Doc was a different beast all together—even more so after today. “Sure.”

Layne’s gaze bounced back and forth between Addy and me. “Who’s Doc?”

“He’s a client of mine, Honey.”

“If Wolfgang is only your friend, how come you kissed him at the hospital?” Addy tossed down the last of her candy.

I squirmed under her grilling. “Officially, he kissed me.”

“How could you let him?” Layne accused more than asked.

“Listen, sometimes friends kiss,” I explained to both of them. “It doesn’t mean they are in love with each other and going to get married. It’s just something adults like to do. It’s not a big deal.”

“Do you and Doc kiss?” Addy asked.

My neck heated up. “Uhh, no,” I lied, kind of. What had happened in that back stairwell had been too frenzied—too carnal—to be labeled a kiss.

Addy leaned closer. “Why not?”

Wow. As if I hadn’t chewed on that question over and over before today. “Doc doesn’t want to kiss me.”At least he says he doesn’t.

“Do you want to kiss him?” Layne asked, his nose crinkled.

“Okay, that’s enough of this Barbara Walters’ interview for today.” I grabbed my purse and stood. “Where’s Aunt Zoe?”

“In the kitchen,” Layne answered.

“Who’s Barbara Walters?” Addy asked.

“I need to ask her something.” I kissed both of their foreheads. “Be good.”

I found Aunt Zoe in the kitchen, humming under her breath, surrounded by tin-foil muffin cups and the mouth-watering aroma of banana bread. My stomach growled, my appetite back now that I was wrapped in the comforts of home and family.

I grabbed one of the cups from the baking rack, the tin still warm, and peeled a muffin free. “These smell wonderful.”

Aunt Zoe lifted an eyebrow. “You’re home early.”

“Things were dead at the office.” At Wolfgang’s house, too, according to Doc. I’d have laughed at my own joke if the memory of Doc’s convulsions wasn’t so fresh in my mind.

“Natalie called.” Aunt Zoe returned to the task of filling another muffin cup. “She can’t watch the kids tomorrow night.”

“Yeah, she got hold of me at work,” I mumbled through a sweet bite of muffin.

“I can close the store tomorrow night and stay home.”

“No, you’re already doing that for me tonight. Let me talk to Harvey, see if he can come over. Hell, he’s at Miss Geary’s house every other night as it is. They can just watch Jeopardy over here—if that’s okay with you.”

“Sure,” she glanced at me over her shoulder, her eyes sparkling more than usual. “But don’t you want the option of having the whole night free?”

“Why?” Oh, duh—sex. “No, it’s just dinner tomorrow.”
