Later, while they were digging into the chocolate cake Math had also had delivered, the doorbell rang.

Bethany said, “Leave me some dragon-shame cake, you vulture-shifters,” as she walked over and opened the front door.

Another delivery person stood there. “Bethany Aura?”

“Um, yeah,” Bethany said, beginning to feel like maybe she should talk to Math about the stalker thing.

Though he wasn’t stalking her.

Delivery people were stalking her and giving her increasingly expensive presents.

The delivery person had Bethany sign a receipt. “Here you go.”

She held out another minty teal jewelry box tied with a silver-mesh ribbon.

Bethany took it and turned back.

Ember and Willow were standing right there, staring at the box.

“Open it,” Willow said.

Bethany wrestled with the ribbon and lid a little before they came off in her hand.

Another jewelry box nestled inside the outer box.

Inside that one, two clear stones glittered on the black fabric.

“Earrings,” Willow said.

“Diamond earrings,” Ember appraised. “One carat each, plus or minus 0.05 carats, mostly plus. Color grade G, clarity grade VS1. Those arenicediamonds.”

Willow turned to Bethany and stared at her, her blue eyes filled with concern. “You said it’s not serious. Doesheknow that?”

Yeah, Bethany needed to talk to Math before this thing got out of hand.
