“Ugh.” Corinne tossed a wrapped lollipop into a basket. “What could he possibly want from her?”

“He wants to launch a product line for her to sell.”

“Smart,” Amelia said.

“Maybe.” Cellophane rustled as Kay grabbed another sheet. “But I don’t like the idea of him working with that woman one bit.”

“All the more reason you two should let people know you’re together,” Amelia said.

“No! That would make things worse. Jessie would likely see that as a challenge.” Kay was growing tired of keeping her relationship with Damon a secret. She knew, now that Jeannie suspected they were dating, it was only a matter of time before everyone assumed the woman was right.

“She’s got a point,” Corinne added. “Remember how I told Jessie that you liked Brad Winiarski?”

Kay did remember, because it helped her stay under the radar with her crush on Damon. “Yes, thank you.”

“You should thank me, because all these years later Damon could have been reconnecting with Jessie.”

Bri had entered the cabin and asked, “Who’s Jessie?”

“Kay’s sworn enemy,” Corinne answered.

“Nice.” Bri walked over to where the twins were wrapping candy and grabbed one off Kay’s tray. “Are we going to hex her?”

The older sisters all exchanged a glance but didn’t say anything to stop Bri from sucking on the lollipop. It did need to be tested, after all.

“No,” Corinne said, barely managing to control her snicker. “Damon needs her for some business thing.”

“Well, that sucks. I’ve been itching to perform a good hex.” Bri crunched on the lollipop.

“Start dating one of your bad boys again,” Amelia suggested. “There’s bound to be one too cocky for his own good who needs you to put him through the wringer.”

“Nope. I’m a changed wo—” Bri let out a huge belch. “Oh, my god. Sorry guys that just —” She burped again. “Whoa.” She frowned before she belched a third time. And then she scowled as she looked at the sucker. “You guys!” She tossed the remains of her lollipop at Kay. “You guys are really”Bri let out another huge burp without holding back—“the worst.” And she stomped out.

When Amelia, Corinne and Kay stopped laughing, Corinne asked, “Who are we going to get to test the other two?”

“You need a tester?” Noah, Corinne’s boyfriend asked as he entered the cottage. He walked over to the tray of candy near Corinne. “I’m always up for a little sugar. Whatcha got?”

“This,” she said before kissing him.

Noah pulled Corinne in close and made the kiss last longer than something casual. Kay sighed with happiness for her sister, and realized she no longer had to hope for the same to happen to her. She had Damon now, and it was nice to finally have a man love her in the same way Noah loved Corinne. Maybe it was time to tell everyone she was in love, too. Including the object of her affection, because she’d been as hesitant to tell Damon how she felt as she had been about making their relationship public. Now though, she was ready to let her love for Damon show.

Damon

The scentof garlic filled the kitchen of the Brannigan house, and Damon was enjoying the lasagna he’d made the family for dinner. A couple days ago Eileen Knight had invited him and his family to join them for the Halloween haunting on Night Meadow Island. While he knew his father knew about it and had probably scoffed at the message Eileen said she’d left him, Damon hoped his siblings would agree to go. He swallowed down a bite of pasta before he said, “The Knight witches are haunting their island on Halloween this year.”

His father narrowed his eyes at Damon.

Will reached for a piece of garlic bread that was in a bowl in the middle of the dinner table. “I heard. And it seems most of the island residents are excited about it.”

“That’s my take, too,” Damon said. “I think it’s great.”

“How great?” Eric grabbed the bottle of red wine and poured some in his glass. “Why do I get the feeling you’re going somewhere with this?”

“Because he is,” Natalie said as she grabbed the wine from Eric. “And I want in.”

“Excellent,” said Damon. “They’ve invited us to join in the haunting this year, and I’m trying to sort out what to do. Any ideas?”
