“After what I just did, you’d be okay with that?”

A twinge of jealousy stirred in Kay, but she pushed it back. She just seen how powerful her connection to Damon was and it was time to trust him. “I would,” she said. “I’d like us to be friends.”

“Isn’t she great?” Damon said in a slightly slurred voice. He got up from the table, stumbled over to Kay, and draped an arm around her shoulder. “She’s my witch, and she’s the best.” He leaned forward and put a finger to his lips. “Shhhh. Don’t tell her, but I’m gonna marry her one day.” He giggled. “Once I convince her to ask me.”

Kay chuckled as her cheeks flamed red. “Okay, then. I think it’s time I got you home to safety.”

“Kay?” Jessie asked.

“Yes?”

“I’m really sorry. I’m embarrassed about what I tried to do, but if you can find a way to get past this, I would like to try to be friends.” She smiled. “It pays off. I offer a hefty friends and family discount.”

Kay smiled back as she imagined the look on her mother’s face when she told her she could get her favorite candles for a discounted price. “Good, because I meant it when I invited you to Halloween. We’re handing out little things that advertise our businesses.”

“Ghosties,” Damon said as if he were a child. “And beeeer,” he drawled out. He wagged his finger. “But you need to be of age.”

Kay snickered as Jessie grinned and said, “I’m think my spell’s a little off, but he is funny like this.”

Kay smiled at Jessie as she wrapped her arm around Damon’s waist to lead him away. “You’re welcome to think of a clever trinket to hand out, too. We’d love to have you.”

“Thanks.” Jessie stepped in front of Kay to walk them out of the house. “I’m in.”

When Kay got Damon to the door, she said, “I’ll be in touch.”

After they left, Kay led Damon to her truck and put him inside. She figured they have to come back for his vehicle at some point, but it’d be fine parked in front of Jessie’s house for a while.

When she got behind the wheel, she asked Damon, “Are you okay?”

“So sleepy,” he said as he leaned back and closed his eyes.

“Sleep is a good idea.” Hopefully by the time she got him back to the Knight house the spell would have worn off. But she wanted to get him home instead of waiting just in case things went wrong. “You nap while I drive you home.”

He let out a little moan before dozing off. Kay occasionally glanced at the man she loved as she cruised along Route 27. Jessie’s spell hadn’t been exact, but Damon shouldn’t have been strong enough on his own to sway the intentions of spelled love dust in Kay’s direction. His feelings for her were what had kept Jessie’s magic from working, and the Knight witch smiled as her heart opened up a little more to let their love sink in.

What Damon and Kay had was a powerful bond that destiny wanted to happen. She recalled Damon saying that while he’d known he was meant for her, she was the one who had to claim him. It was true that a Knight witch had to claim her man, but to ask for Damon’s hand in marriage? Well, come to think of it, that might be true, too. Kay recalled Amelia’s story of her engagement to James. Amelia told him to ask her while they were in a New York City cab.

“Oh, Damon,” Kay chuckled when she thought about having to ask him for his hand in marriage. “That’s one way to make sure I’m ready,” she said to the sleeping man beside her as if he’d answer. It occurred to her that even in his woozy confession that he planned to marry her earlier, he’d spoken their truth. If he was going to have to change his last name to Knight then perhaps it made sense she’d have to ask him to do it. She wondered if she could get him a ring.

Kay laughed softly to herself because not one piece of this train of thought was scaring her. In fact, she’d been more afraid today about the possibility of losing Damon. That told her all she needed to know. Damon was her witch, and he was going to be her husband one day.

A dull achein his head made Damon groan as he woke up and blinked, trying to place where he was. The white plaster ceiling he saw had a tiny crack in it, and the aroma of cinnamon filled the air. He smiled when he realized he was at Kay’s house.

“Hey,” she said softly as the couch he was on sank under her weight. He gazed into her cornflower blue eyes as she asked, “How are you feeling?”

“Like I had way more fun than I should have.”

She placed her cool fingers on his temples and chanted softly. The pain of his headache slipped away. His girlfriend’s healing abilities were definitely handy. He sat up and let out a sigh as the events from earlier came back to him. “Jessie.”

“Yeah. She tried to perform a love spell on you, but it needed some work.”

A confession he’d made under the influence of that spell came back to him, and he wondered if he should address it. Kay hadn’t freaked out on him yet, but he was curious if she was having a meltdown on the inside after he’d said he planned to marry her one day. “It was more like a spell to make me spill out my heart.”

Kay smiled. “I believe it was, and I’ve taken your admissions under advisement.”
