“He doesn’t know?”

The memory flits in then out again. At least, I think it’s a memory. I don’t know the voice. It goes by too quickly. I can’t tell who the person is referring to when they speak. I’m lost. That’s the most frustrating part of it.

This is why the last therapist was fired. If I’m being honest, it’s the reason they all were. None of them could help me connect the dots. I feel like I’m one link away but it’s just out of my reach. My phone rings.

M.R.C.?

Yet another thing I’ve been trying to figure out. What does M.R.C. stand for? I’ve answered the call before and a person starts spewing information at me. Before I could even respond, the call either ended or they begin speaking to someone else. Seeing as I feel that’s one of the rudest things a person can do, I ended the call.

Now, I’ve taken to ignoring the calls. Internet searches have come up with things that confuse me further, so I’ve left it alone.

Until today.

“Hello?”

“Dr. Emory? Oh, wow. Okay. I’ve been ... I’m so sorry to bother you. It’s just that some gentlemen are here. They said they had a meeting set with you. I didn’t gain access to your calendar until a few hours ago so I couldn’t call you to remind you that this was coming. I’ve handled most of the other events and paperwork I was asked to handle. You have some clients that are expecting you today. Their charts need to be updated and you’re needed to sign off on continuation of their treatments. I spoke with a Dr. Godfrey. He said you were cleared to return to light duties over a month ago. We haven’t seen you in office. When I’ve previously phoned you, our calls kept getting disconnected.”

Whoever this person is must have me confused with someone else. I mean, yes, I’ve been cleared for light duty. Yes, I’ve been able to return to work. No, I have no idea who this person is or why they’re calling me.

“Wait a second. I think you have me confused with someone else.”

“No ma’am. I don’t. Your mother had me set up a secondary office here. The other location is being run by Penelope Netters. All her references checked out and she came highly recommended. She used to work for a company out of Los Angeles called Corporate Cares. A woman by the name of Rylee Donavan gave her a glowing recommendation. If you could be in office ... soon, that would be great. The men will be back at 10:30.”

“I’m sorry. Where’s here? And who are you?”

The woman on the other end of the line laughs mirthlessly.

“She wasn’t lying. She was actually telling the truth. My name is Paislynn Waters. I've worked for Moonbeam Rehab Center 4 almost two years no. I am your executive assistant here at the Savannah office. I'll send you the address the office. I can't believe your mother was telling the truth.”

“Huh, that's a lot of information. I'm going to have to call my mother ever value story. if everything checks out then I guess I'll be there shortly.”

“Thank you. thank you very much. I'll be glad to see you again Dr. Emory.”

I guess I'm calling my mother a lot soon than I believed I would.

“Hey there, Moonbeam.”

That memory I know well. It’s what my grandmother used to call me. I should probably make her my next phone call. She’s probably still pissed at me for leaving things the way I did, but I should reach out.

First, I my mother. Taking a deep breath, I dial the one number I don’t purposely dial often.

“Hello, Coleman residence,” a male voice says after the phone rings twice on my side of the call.

“Hello, is Mrs. Coleman available?”

“Yes ma'am. who may I ask is calling?”

“Will you let her know Brooklyn is on the phone, please Sir?”

“Yes ma'am. Will do.”

“Angel cakes, it's so nice to hear from you. To what do I owe the pleasure of this phone call?”

“Mom, I think you have some explaining to do.”

“What do you think I did now? I happened minding my own business. I've also been trying to do everything I could to do right by you. You sound upset, like I've done something wrong.”

“I guess you can say that I'm upset. I just got off the phone with someone by the name of Paislynn Waters who says that she is my executive assistant. She also says you gave her instructions to open up an office here in Savannah on my behalf. Could you tell me what that's about?” She's quiet for few minutes which lets me know she knows exactly what I'm talking about. “You know all about Moonbeam Rehab Center, don't you?”
