I’m working my way through the last obstacles of the level when I see movement reflected in my screen. The muscles in my stomach clench and a shiver runs down my spine. I know this feeling. It’s one I thought was a fluke. I thought it manifested because of young love and not because of the boy behind it.

I was wrong. Dead wrong as the warmth of his breath as it causes heat to rush over my body.

“Wouldn’t have taken you as one to play this sort of game.”

“What? You’ve got to be kidding me right now.”

“Nope. I’m not kidding.”

“I wasn’t talking to you. Not that it would matter.”

“What does that mean?”

“Nothing. You can’t be out here.”

“Who says?”

“It’s ... there are rules. This is an employee only area.”

He takes a seat across from me. He’s making himself comfortable, acting as if I haven’t said a word.

“Right.”

“How did you even get back here? Only those who work here have a pass.”

“True. You’re right about this area being restricted.”

I know my brows are furrowed because I’m confused as to why he’s still out here. I’m even more puzzled as to how he got past the doorway.

“You still need to explain what you’re doing here. Did someone let you back here or something?”

“Or something.”

“You’re doing this to irritate me, aren’t you?”

He chuckles and I feel like that deep, rumble jumps from his side of the solarium to right where I’m sitting. It practically pulses through every fiber of my being. He should not have this effect on me. How is it possible this man impacts me like this when no man who has come after him could make me perk up the way he does? All he did was chuckle. What they heck is wrong with me?

When I look up from my phone, the phone I haven’t been paying attention to, he’s giving me that knowing look. I hate that look. It’s the look that says he knows where my mind drifted. Yet another thing that shouldn’t happen. He shouldn’t know what I’m thinking. It’s literally been years.

“I haven’t done a thing. I’m simply sitting here, minding my own business, soaking up some good ole vitamin D while enjoying the afternoon breeze.”

“Really? That’s all you’re doing. None of this has anything to do with slowly driving me insane or invading my personal space.”

He begins to play with something, but I can’t make out what it is because I’m too focused on his face. He has the look. Daire has a number of looks that put me instantly on high alert. This one is one that has the hairs on my arms standing on end. It makes me nervous and uncomfortable. He’s thinking of something. Whatever it is, I know I’m not going to like it.

Daire’s up and out of his seat then inches away from me. I feel the heat of his body as he hovers over me. He slowly leans down until his face is right above mine. He’s staring at me. Our gazes are locked with one another’s. His breaths become my own and vice versa. Leaning closer, he keeps his gaze connected to mine until the last instant. His lips graze my ear before the heat of his breath tickles my lobe. When he speaks, the rumble of his voice vibrates against my neck.

Try as I may, I can’t stop the shuttering response my body has to his words.

“This is me being in your personal space. Being five feet away from you is the exact opposite.”

“Um, am I interrupting something?”

Daire slowly rises then takes a step back. I don’t know exactly what he’s seeing but whatever it is, he’s enjoying it.

That’s great. That’s just what I need.

“I’ve always been a better show-er than a tell-er. No ma’am. You’re not interrupting anything, Ms. Forrester. I was just helping Ms. Emory with understanding the meaning of ‘personal space’.” He places his hand in his pocket then pulls something out. He flips it a few times in his hand before he taps the back of his neck with it. “Enjoy the rest of your workday, ladies.”
