As if she knows I’m thinking of her, I feel that familiar tingle.

I watch her as she makes her way to the outer area which is almost as breathtaking as she is. I’m seated in one of the more obscure corners of the rooftop but is a perfect spot for observation.Bar Julianis and was one of my favorite places to visit when I was younger. Ryder and I used to come to Savannah just because we could. Having family in the city made it convenient.

Our uncle used to spend a lot of time at this hotel when he just wanted to get away from it all. He’d said it was our late aunt’s favorite view. When I missed her and needed to clear my head, this is where I’d come. The view of the city, with its hustle and bustle on one side and the Savannah River on the other, gave me plenty to get lost in.

All of it pales in comparison to her. Tonight, she’s wearing a bronze color dress that skims her ankles at the back. It has long sleeves with a belt. The dress buttons in the front but not many of the top buttons are closed. She moves to face her friend, Journee, who is wearing a matching red version of her dress. That’s when I notice her entire leg is on display. Her gorgeous leg looks like it goes on for days. I don’t know if it’s the light that’s hitting it or some issue with my vision, but it appears to glimmer in the glow from the bulbs.

“Now, I’m fucking uncomfortable,” I murmur to myself as I finish the last of my drink, thankful to find it doesn’t have any alcohol in it.

That must be Hope’s doing. Her way of continuing to take care of me without physically doing it. I watch her and wonder if she remembers this rooftop.

The waiter I hadn’t noticed turns toward me to ask if I need a refill. His bent body effectively blocks me from taking in the vision that is Brooklynn. Quickly fishing out a bill, I hand it to the male while trying to move him out of my line of sight. He acknowledges whatever I hand him with a grateful reply then says something about returning as fast as he can. When I look back in the same area, I have my answer to my question.

Given the expression on her face, she remembers exactly what happened the last time we were both here. Yeah, she knows exactly where we are. This location was a coincidence even in its significance. I hadn’t expected the two of us to be on this rooftop again.

Chapter 16

BROOKLYNN

––––––––

Savannah, GA May 5– Friday

The morning of the Anniversary Event

Hope Foundation has become the place I escape to when I need to get away from everything. For the first time ever, it’s also the place I’ve come to find answers and get clarity.

“Never thought I’d ever think that about this place.”

“Hmm? Did you say something Brook?” Journee asks me.

Today, she’s rocking twists in her hair and her fun print scrubs. That means we will have children in the building. As much as I love kids, I don’t think I can handle them today. My mind is too wrapped up in the past to focus on being the playful person I become when I’m around little ones.

“Nothing. Do you know where Mrs. Hope is?”

Journee gives me one of her patented looks that causes me to plaster on a smile. I don’t want her to worry.

“She was upstairs in the conference room. Today is the anniversary thing and they have interviews all morning. I thought you were going to be at MRC today.”

“I’m going over there after ... I’ll see you later.”

I head to the stairs. I was going through the items of the old box my mom sent me. inside were some things I expected. It also had a few things I hadn’t. One was a journal I’d kept that was dated from a year ago. Inside was a list I’d created.

“Dr. Alexander? Who is that?”
