She snags some papers off the printer then moves towards me. Giving me a brief hug, she moves towards the door.

“Sure. I mean. It’ll probably be the day after tomorrow that we’ll see each other but we can talk some more then.”

“You’re not coming tonight?”

“No. I don’t think I should. Things are off between me and ... Jaxson.”

“I didn’t know. Did something ... nope. I can’t get into that. I hope you stop in. The food is going to be spectacular and the deserts divine. Don’t let whatever’s going on keep you from that. Also, don’t worry about them ‘puzzle pieces’ so much. They’ll come together when you’re ready for them.”

She gives me a parting smile then she’s out the door. Journee is going to be happy to know I have some answers to some of her questions. I even have a few of my own answered.

Savannah, GA May 5- Friday evening

The Anniversary Event

“Are you sure you don’t want to come? I mean, we did all this shopping to get the perfect dresses. You’re telling me, you’re going to let it collect dust in your closet?

Journee has asked me at least five times to change my mind. I’m just not up for another round with Daire. Plus, I want to take time to go through the contents of the box and my journal. Seeing my own handwriting seems to make things a lot realer than hearing details about my life from other people.

“For like the four billionth time, I’m going to stay home tonight.”

“I’m sad for you. You’ve been looking forward to this just as much as I’ve been. I wish I could change your mind.”

“Sorry, Girly. This chick’s staying in and working. I’ve got things that need my attention. you go. Have enough fun for the both of us.”

“Fine. I’ll go. I will pretend to be miserable for the first thirty seconds. I’ll then, shamelessly, send photos of all the gorgeous things we expect them to have at such an occasion.”

“Please do that.”

She rushes to me where I’m sitting in the library and gives me a huge hug.

“Love you, Blazing Beauty.”

I laugh out loud then blow her a kiss.

“Love you, Journee Belle!” She blows a kiss right back to me. “Be safe.”

“Will do, Party Pooper.”

Laughing again, I flip the pages of my old journal as I listen for the car we ordered to drive off. The instant it drives off, I arm the alarm then begin my evening of reviewing “Life According to Me”.

An hour later, I hear music and feel a vibration. I’m no longer in the library, I’m on one of the couches in the living room. I must’ve fallen asleep.

I’m dazed and confused as I feel around for my phone. I have to blink a few times before I can focus on the screen.

“Hello?”

“Get dressed. The car will be there to get you in fifteen minutes. Wait ... were you asleep? Wake the hell up and get over here, right now.”

“Journee, we talked about this already. I told you ...”

“Nope. Get here. Trust me. Go get dressed. I’ll meet you at the doorway, so you don’t get lost.” She’s quiet for ten seconds then she’s speaking again. “Fourteen minutes. Get. Dressed.”

As much as I don’t want to go, I don’t have the energy to argue with her.

“It’s going to take me longer than that to get dressed. I have to do my hair.”

“I don’t care. Just go get ready. The driver will wait. Damn!”
