I breathe an audible sigh of relief when I hear those words. That means they could be there for hours, especially if Hope closes her door. I watch, like a stalker, as the two women walk to the door. Brooklynn turns to look behind her. I step out of the doorway then lean into Paris giving her a hug. She says something about being ready to get started. I nod as I step back. The door closes and the light above it turns on.

Success!

Bullet dodged for the moment. I spend the next thirty minutes counting the seconds until we are finished. Once we are down and Paris is leaving, I practically sprint to my office. We are packed and exiting the building five minutes later.

This isn’t going to work. I’m going to cause myself to have some major issues if I keep this up. A message from Hope later that evening changes the game and makes me believe in something I didn’t think I’d ever have again:

A future.

Chapter 26

Brooklynn

––––––––

Savannah, GA June 16– Friday morning

Day before the Annual Hope House Family Fair

This morning, my mother called me. If that weren't strange enough, Then the fact that she hung up when I answered would be. She doesn't really call me too often. Actually, our calls are pretty non-existent. When I try to call her back, it goes straight to voicemail. another thing that was odd. her voicemail was no longer set-up. it just repeated back the phone number that I called. A few minutes later, I hear Journee on the phone. Deciding to just try my mother again later, I jump in the shower. when I come out, I have another missed call from my mother in a note from Journee.

The note from journey said my mother called her but didn't give a reason why she called, nor did she leave a message. She just asked if I was at home. Strange. I get dressed then I leave for work. This has become my routine. today just feels weird. Yesterday, I went to my grandmother's grave site. I left with one major question. I've already reached out to Hope because I need to talk it through. Normally, add talk to Noelle but she's busy with movers today. Hope said she wouldn't be in the office for another couple hours. That meant I had time to kill.

After about an hour, I checked my phone and realized I have a voicemail. My mother is message wasn't what I was expecting.

Hello there Brooklyn, I'm calling to let you know that I'm leaving. I'm going out of town indefinitely. I know I said you will be able to talk to me when you were ready. I have to apologize because that's not going to be the case. my hope is things will work themselves out. My promise was I would try. I did and quickly realized that's just not who I am. I know you and your grandmother once argued about me. Sorry to disappoint you, Sweetheart. As much as I hate to admit this, she was right. this doesn't suit me. take care of yourself. hopefully you'll find the answers you're looking for. Love you, Girlie. Your Mother.

I couldn't even bring myself to react to that message. Nothing in it surprised me. It does hurt to know my grandmother was right for protecting me from her all those years ago. Grandma Elle knew her daughter well. She told me once that she hoped my mother would change. Beatrix never did. She was selfish when she was younger and acted spoiled. It was nothing that her parents had done. Beatrix took on a persona and remained in that character.

No matter what they said or did, their daughter wouldn't change her ways.

It was one of Grandma Elle’s greatest heartaches. It broke her heart even further to learn my mother didn't contest my father's decision to leave me in the care of my grandmother after he passed away. The only reason Beatrix returned was to collect her check.

That is the woman who was my mother. Her leaving is just another situation. I'm not even shocked by the way she left.

My phone rang as soon as I finished listening to the message. It’s Noelle.

“Hey there, how’s the move going?”

“Good. I’m almost done already. Were you expecting some boxes today?”

“No. Did some arrive?”

“Yes. quite a few. So many that I don't know where you want me to put them.”
