Chapter 27

Jaxson

Savannah, GA June 17– Saturday

Annual Hope House Family Fair

My “date” for the night isn’t the one I thought it would be considering how hard the Blaze Fanclub pushed for her to here. The one who I have on my “arm” is no one to snub. In a way I have Blaze with me. having JB holding my hand is almost better.

The best would be if all three of us were here together.

Agreed.

I’m glad Hope agreed to change the design of “A Gambler’s Delight” to a more kid friendly venue. At first, she fought me on it. When Hope found out she had a niece, she nearly lost it. Her entire demeanor changed. Suddenly, she was more amenable to everything I wanted to do. Given who I was doing it for, she couldn’t help but agree to it all. We’ve converted a portion of Forsythe Park to our own “Vegas Strip”. Every game has an adult and a kid-friendly version. There are so many different attractions including a bounce house that J.B. has said we have to go in before we do anything else.

Right now, she just wants to walk around to sketch out a game plan for the evening. That is definitely a quality she picked up from her mother. She’s making notes on a notepad she had in her purse. If the purse hadn’t thrown me for a loop already, the damn notebook would’ve blown my mind. She giggles causing me to look down. I want to know what caused her to laugh. I want to know everything about her. Six years is a long time and I have a lot of catching up to do.

“I knew it!” She starts to skip while pulling me through a small crowd. “Come on, Daddy. Come on!”

I don’t know what she sees but whatever it is has her excited enough to drag me. Her grip tightens as the crowd parts, and I get a glimpse of what she sees. Correction. I should say who.

The look on Brooklynn’s face worries me. Maybe those doctors were right all along, and she can’t handle the truth. Her face initially registers shock as she stands frozen in place. Confusion is the next thing that moves across her features as she looks from me to J.B. then back to me. I don’t know what to think. I’m in unknown territory here. I don’t know how to proceed. Our daughter has no such problem. She’s bounding forward without a care in the world.

Mrs. Coleman has been busting her ass for the last year to keep this from happening. It’s not something I set out to do. Even though, it is something I said we should. As fear begins to be the predominant look on Brooklynn’s face, I’m feeling I was totally fucking wrong about my belief that we should let her see her daughter.

J.B.’s let’s go of my hand and leaps. Every part of my being is freaking the fuck out. I’m scared Brooklynn isn’t going to catch our little girl. I’m afraid this perfect, little bundle of joy is about to be devastated and I’m not ready witness that heartbreak.

I do the only think I can. I’m hoping it’s the right thing to do, but who the hell knows.

Brooklynn

Savannah, GA June 10– A Gambler’s Delight Event

My arms wrap around her. Two little arms reach up and hug my neck.

Please let this be real. Please don’t let it be a dream.

I know I’m not going to be able to handle it if she’s not real. She must be real, right? Her hand was in Daire’s. If this is a dream, the fear I saw on his face right before I caught her wouldn’t have been there. It was never there before.

“It’s his right to know, Moonbeam. This isn’t right. Why would you keep this from him?”

I stand from the kitchen table and walk to the sink. Quickly washing my dish, I try to calm myself. This isn’t something I want to hear.

“Now that you’ve shared your secret, I guess everyone should share theirs!”

It’s the first time I’ve ever raised my voice at my grandmother. She gasps and I turn on my heel, making my exit.

Not ten minutes later, the house was on fire. Tears stream down my face.

“Oh God.”

Daire steps closer as I begin to break down. His arms wrap around the two of us as the last of the puzzle begins to slide into place.
