“We’ve got a lot to talk about. So, fucking much. I should be pissed at you, but I can’t be right now. Not right now.”

The doctor clears his throat. I forgot he was in the room until just then.

“I’m going to leave you to it. Just wanted to say we’re going to keep you overnight for observation, Dr. Emory, then you’re free to go as soon as tomorrow. Keep an eye on the bump on her head though.”

We both nod our heads. I listen for the door to close behind the doctor.

“First stop ...?” she begins.

“Hope House.”

Savannah, GA April- Monday morning

Ten Months Later

We sit on a park bench waiting. It’s a beautiful day in Savannah. I love these days. Yesterday, it rained all day. As much as I love how quiet the city is when it rains, it makes me miss the hustle and bustle of Savannah streets. Taking a deep breath, I inhale the scent of fresh flowers, newly mowed grass, and the exquisite flavors only downtown Savannah could produce.

Jayla suddenly hops off the bench and takes off running. I move to follow her but instantly stop because I see exactly where she’s headed. Her father spreads his arms wide and catches her when she launches herself from the ground. This little bundle of energy is being enrolled in gymnastics today. We’ve also talked about possibly getting her into a rock-climbing class. If she’s not leaping, flipping, or tumbling, she’s climbing on something. mainly, her father or her Uncle Ryder or Uncle Graham. She even has her cousin climbing things with her. Those two instantaneously hit it off. They’re inseparable. Seeing them together makes me feel bad for not telling Daire about Jayla sooner.

I shake myself. Repeating Dr. Broughton’s and Noelle’s reiterated words, I tell myself I need to let go of the guilt of that. Daire has forgiven me. for the most part. Every so often, he taunts me with it. The instant he sees how I react to it. He changes his tune.

Seeing Daire with Jayla is one of my favorite things to see. I love how much he loves her, how he dotes on her, how much he cares for her. It’s the best thing. It’s better than anything I ever dreamed up. We’ve talked a lot. So much has been shared. The good, the bad, and the ugly has all been laid out.

We both have had more than enough of holding on to the mess. All our baggage is out there for the both of us to claim. The both of us see personal therapists. We also see a couples’ therapist.

It’s official. We are a couple and I’m loving every moment of it. Daire is even returning to racing. He’s been training and is finally able to get himself in and out of the car with no trouble. I didn’t know they had to get out of the cars in seconds with all the racing gear and his helmet. He is like a kid in a candy store because his new vehicle is equipped with CD Enterprises neck protection device. Knowing my guy is thrilled to have his idol’s equipment in his ride makes me one happy chick.

“What are you thinking about?” Daire asks me. I smile up at him as he holds our daughter on his back. “You can’t think of that for a number of reasons.”

I laugh out loud.

“What’s funny, Mommy?”

I shake my head preparing to respond but Daire beats me to it.

“Mommy’s being a bad girl.”

I swat Daire’s leg but he’s not paying me any attention.
