Lying on the grass with Heaven’s Cove stretched out in front of her and Corey Allford’s arms around her felt exactly right. It felt like the door into the kind of different life she needed.

They broke apart when a car horn sounded from the road.

‘It’s not Gran, is it?’ asked Corey, groaning. ‘I get my terrible timing from her.’

Lettie squinted towards the lane. ‘No, I think it’s my taxi at last. Your gran must have told the driver we’d walked on.’

Corey stood up slowly and pulled Lettie to her feet. ‘I guess you’d better go, then and I apologise for getting you all… grassy.’ He pulled a blade of grass from Lettie’s hair and tried to smile but didn’t quite manage it. ‘You don’t want to miss your train.’

He thought she was still leaving. He thought she still could leave after what had just happened. But Lettie knew what she wanted to do. As she started to walk towards the road, Corey called after her: ‘Aren’t you going to say goodbye?’

Lettie stopped and turned. He looked so vulnerable and hurt, it broke her heart.

‘There’s no need. I’m just going to tell the taxi driver that I don’t need a ride to the station after all. I’m sure my family can manage without me for at least a few more days. I’ll be back in a minute. Honest.’

Corey gave a long, slow smile that made his dark eyes twinkle. ‘I’ll trust you, Lettie Starcross.’
