‘No way,’ answered Rosie with a grin. ‘I’ve not long taken this house on and it means too much to me to let it go. I understand why Florence is so against selling Lovers’ Link.’

‘I saw Florence’s grandson today, too. Up on the headland. Oh, I forgot to ask him about his call-out on the lifeboat yesterday afternoon.’

‘That was just a false alarm but word in the village is that the lifeboat got a call after midnight and didn’t return until almost dawn.’

No wonder he’d looked tired. Lettie tried to imagine surging through towering dark waves to come to someone’s rescue, but even the thought of it made her shudder.

‘Corey’s brave, working on the lifeboat.’

‘He’s one of the volunteer crew members. Hold on.’ Rosie rummaged in a pile of papers under her desk and pulled out a newspaper. ‘They had their photo in the local paper last week.’

The picture Rosie thrust under her nose showed a group of men and women lined up on the deck of a lifeboat, all wearing the same yellow and black weatherproof uniforms and matching boots. She looked along the line until she spotted Corey, taller than the rest, with his coal-black hair blowing in the breeze.

‘Did last night’s call-out go OK, do you know?’ she asked.

‘I think so. They went out to a boat that had got into trouble in rough seas and towed it back into harbour.’ When Lettie shivered again at the thought of deep, dark water, Rosie gave her a sideways glance. ‘And I agree he’s very brave.’

‘Anyone who goes out on the sea in a storm to help someone else is brave in my book.’

‘And he’s good-looking.’

Lettie glanced back at Rosie, who was putting her papers into a pile and didn’t catch her eye.

‘Yeah, I guess so. How long has he lived here?’

‘Not that long. He moved away for a while and his marriage to Grace ended badly and he moved in with his grandmother about twelve months ago because she needed his support.’ Rosie shrugged. ‘That’s all I know. I’m not much into gossip.’

‘Me neither,’ said Lettie, though she was itching to know more. Singing fisherman Corey, who was grumpy one minute and being heroic the next, was almost as much of an enigma as his great-uncle.
