“Why doI even need to know this stuff? Isn’t this what I have you for?”

I was being a brat, and I knew it, for the sole purpose of having Isaiah send his signature sexy scowl in my direction.

He didn’t disappoint.

His thick eyebrows furrowed together, his top lip curling a bit as he fixed his gaze in my direction.

“We’ve been over this, Dee. Yes, you need to know how to defend yourself. I won’t always be around.”

Inwardly, I was bursting with butterflies over the nickname - he was the only person who called me that.

Dee.

The way it rolled off his lips, so easily, in that rasp of his… it was literally everything my teenage dreams were made of. But the joy in that quickly wore off as my brain fully processed his words.

“What do you mean you won’t always be around? Thorns are basically invincible, and protecting me is literally your job, right?”

“For now,” he answered, suddenly unable to meet my gaze.

Nervous nausea pricked at my gut, making a sour taste creep up the back of my throat.

“Are you being transferred or something?” I asked him.

“Nothing for you to worry about,” he said, very abruptly locking eyes with me, in a way that made my heart race. “I’m here right now, and we’re going to get this down, aren’t we?” he asked, in a tone that invited no dissent. “I want you to be safe at all times, not just when I’m there to protect you. But as long as I’m around… I’ll never let anything happen to you.”

“I knowyou’re not in here looking this good by yourself…”

Those words brought an instant flush of heat to my face, even though I was in on the little game Isaiah had apparently decided he wanted to play.

“Areyoutrying to be the person I’m here with?” I asked, shooting him a smirk as the bartender slid me the drink I’d waffled back and forth so long over ordering or not.

A very unassuming vodka and soda that was the entire reason we were even out in the first place.

Well… maybe notthereason, but certainly one.

It was our last night here.

Our last night with just us, and just paradise, before we had to make our way back to the responsibilities that came with our day to day lives.

My ability to pretend to be a girl with no other cares than basking in the unfaltering attention of her childhood crush was ending.

Honestly… I was tempted to book a few more days.

But that would just be putting off the inevitable.

“I want to see you in that.”

I’d been packing my suitcase back up while Isaiah watched and had pulled down the barely there dress I’d brought along as… a fantasy, I guess. The chances I was actually going somewhere where such an outfit would be appropriate had been non-existent, but it was one of thosea girl can dreamkinda things.

At least, until Zay announced his desire to see it become a reality.

“You mean… right now?” I’d asked, holding the slinky blue fabric against my body. “Why, so you can take it off?”

He grinned. “Yes, but before that… we can have drinks, and dance, and you can enjoy being the sexiest woman in the club…”

My eyes went wide. “Club? You think I’m going to a club?”
