“Are we moving or what, you two? Seems like I’m the only one packing up the boxes here,” Martin said as he came back from the car for another load of boxes.

“We’ll talk later, Charley. I want to hear all about this.” Hunter’s firm voice set my blood to a simmer. I barely kept from rolling my neck to fight off the shiver that threatened to race up my spine.

It was strange, and I never had this type of reaction to a man before. I was hyperaware of him as we finished loading up both Martin’s truck and my car with boxes. The only things left in the apartment was my big furniture items like my daybed that doubled as my couch, my small dining room table and chairs that took up a small corner of the kitchen, the large chest of drawers that doubled as my TV stand, and my TV itself.

We were about to head to my new apartment when Hunter followed me to my car. “Keys.” He held out his hand for my key ring.

“What?”

“Give me your keys, Angel.”

I swallowed hard and was a bit confused, but I handed him the keys to my car. “I thought you were going to ride with Martin?”

Hunter ignored my statement and unlocked the doors. He followed me to the passenger side of the car and buckled me into the vehicle. I sucked in a sharp breath because he was so close. I could smell him: sweaty, musky, and utterly delicious. My stomach fluttered to life, and I felt my breasts tingle with awareness at his nearness.

“No, we need to finish our discussion.”

I relaxed a little. He just wanted to finish talking about my move. He wasn’t really trying to hit on me. This man was so far out of my league. Hunter was absolutely stunning to look at. Never would he be interested in a girl who knew nothing about men, who was short and had a tendency to overindulge when she was cooking. I was a good twenty pounds overweight, and most of that weight was in my bust, hips, and thighs.

“Oh, okay. But you won’t tell Martin?”

Hunter gave me a small smirk that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “No, I won’t tell Martin.”

Chapter 3

HUNTER

Hell no, I would nottell Martin. I was going to handle the asshole apartment manager myself. She lived here for four years—four fucking years where she feared the manager. It pissed me off. Not only did Martin not know, but she also allowed herself to be in an unsafe environment for that long, telling no one of what was going on. No, I had no plans to tell Martin, but she damn well was going to after I found out everything and took care of the situation.

After I buckled her into her seat, I went around to the other side of the car and adjusted the seat before climbing in and starting the car. I flipped the air on full blast and shut the moon roof so we could talk without the sound of air coming into the car.

“Tell me about your apartment manager.” I said as I pulled out onto the road, following behind her brother. “What was he doing in your apartment?”

“One time he was changing the batteries in the smoke detector in the kitchen. I just wasn’t expecting him to be there, you know?”

“Okay, and the next time he was there?”
