Epilogue

Olive

The island became less and less empty with time.

Lerin had a way of finding people who needed a change, and time and time again we welcomed them onto our island with open arms. It was an island of misfits, from shifters to witches, to people who just needed a getaway.

My feet were warm on the beach, where I sat digging my toes into the tan sand and watching the waves come in. It reminded me of how soothing I used to find walking in the city at night. That reassurance that there was still peace out there amidst all the chaos.

“Let’s go see Mommy,” Lerin cooed in the distance. My nipples got hard immediately, still getting used to breastfeeding, and I turned to watch him carrying our son to me.

I ended up pregnant within the first couple of weeks of our arrival.

We knew what this might mean for our child, since we didn’t know whether anyone else had gotten pregnant yet. But we didn’t talk about it.

“Rhuron,” I cooed to our boy.

He was named after the man who saved us.

Lerin sat down in the sand behind me, his arms wrapping around my waist. Beads of river water clung to his suntanned skin, glimmering in the summer air. He looked practically lickable, I had to fight down the urge to ask him if he wanted to have another child already.

He was beautiful, perfect…everything.

He kissed my shoulders like he was trying to kiss every freckle that had formed in the last nine months.

“I love you,” he murmured, his voice deep and dreamy. I smiled and leaned back against his firm abs.

“I love you too,” I answered.

We were free.

No drama of the kingdom or stress from having to keep up appearances. We had each other, and I wouldn’t trade any amount of riches for that.
