“Are you hungry?”

Her face lit up, and I smiled, thinking about how quickly she gulped down that castle breakfast I’d brought her. She deserved the best things, and I wanted to give it all to her.

“Why are they treating you like this? I thought it was your uncle who was king?”

It stung a little for her to mention it, but I buried that down. “Until someone from my generation has a son, I’m considered a prince,” I admitted.

“What?” She sounded so surprised, I had to laugh.

“I didn’t want to scare you off with that.”

“Fair.”

Still holding my hand, she let me take her for breakfast.

The castle was busy, still chaotic with the news of Tierner, and I tried to steer her clear of any information on him. He would genuinely scare her off. She didn’t need to know about the worst parts of this world just because she agreed to come here.

Eventually, she’d live here with me, and I could fully protect her.

Maybe then I could tell her.

Over a parfait and some sweet ginger lemonade, she finally relaxed. “To be honest, I thought you might have been military because of how stiff you are sometimes,” she admitted. “I didn’t think you’d be a prince.”

“I served in the kingdom’s military for four years,” I admitted.

Her expression dropped into one of earnest surprise now.

“But you’re only like- what? Twenty-two?”

“Twenty-four,” I nodded.

“Ah.” She stirred around her parfait with her spoon thoughtfully. “That explains some of it.”

“Was it something you had a vision of?”

“No,” her voice was suddenly a little uncomfortable. “I just have a lot to learn about you.”

“And I’m willing to show you all of it.”

She blushed again, and I loved it. She was softening up around me, no longer acting like the girl I watched knock a man onto his ass. It was a version of her only I got to see.

It was mine.

“What part of the kingdom would you like to see after this?” I asked.

“You promised me I’d get to see your room.”

I couldn’t argue with that logic.
