I felt ridiculous, but I needed to respect what he told me since he knew the place better than me.

“He just means not to do it unaccompanied. Please, relax,” she cooed. “I’m not here to attack or harm you. I’m who told him to seek you out.”

I swallowed down my nerves.

I couldn’t help but feel like something terrible was about to happen.

“Why did you tell him about me?”

“Because you’re fated mates. Now come, sit, let’s talk.”

Her warm demeanor slowly relaxed me, and I followed as she requested. “Can the door stay open?”

“Yes, of course. I promise I’m not your foe,” she smiled sadly.

I nodded and sat down at the table where she led me.

“You didn’t seem to react when I told you he was your fated mate.”

“I don’t know; it feels right.”

She nodded to my response, and a servant brought in a kettle, some cups, and what looked like scones. I was starving. As I started to eat, she sipped her tea before stirring in some honey to taste. “I know why you’re anxious about Dralle.”

Oh no.

“Look, it’s not that I don’t trust him, I just-”

“This arrangement is for life. As fated mates, and eventually as bride and groom.” She pulled off a bite of scone and popped it into her mouth. Her black lipstick made her teeth look whiter, despite noticeable tea stains. She was just some old woman: I needed to relax.

She didn’t know about my visions of Dralle.

She didn’t know what I was scared of.

“Wait- did you say for life?” I froze as I caught what she was telling me.

“Yes, as fated mates, you’re destined to become his bride. All of the princes have been coming to me to seek out their future brides. And all but one have had a happy ending.”

“What happened to the one that didn’t?”

She frowned and then sipped her tea instead of answering the question.

“You should talk to Dralle about that once you two have had more time together,” she said softly.

I nodded, already feeling like I was overstepping my boundaries with him.

“When he approached me, he knew we were fated mates? He knew all of this and dated me with that intent?”

“He likes you a lot,” she smiled.

I knew she wasn’t lying.

“It just feels a little uneven.”

“You knew about him before you started dating him too,” she prodded. I agreed; the knot in my stomach grew tighter. “It’s only uneven because he knew why you two were destined for each other before you by a week. After that, everything evened out.”

I looked down at my scone and felt like I’d lost my appetite.

“Does he only care about me for this, though? Is it regardless of who I am?”
