“Congratulations.” My voice sounded hollow, but I was pissed. I just wanted a chance. I wasn’t sure what I’d do if I ended up winning the timing lottery and gaining the crown: but I liked the same chance at it as anyone else.

“Thanks,” he smiled lightheartedly.

I hated how much I disliked him. He wasn’t a bad guy, sure he could grow and change, and that would be awesome, but he also was just a guy having to deal with the same family bullshit as me. He knew the same pressures I did, and I know that him getting his wife wasn’t easy because she almost killed herself because of him.

At the same time, I knew that he lucked into this and felt like he deserved it somehow.

That drove me up the goddamned wall.

Angry, feeling the sting of disappointment I was sure to face from my father when I got back to the castle, I decided I was slipping back to Heather that night.

I needed her.

She was the only thing that seemed to make sense to me anymore.
