Dralle

She seemed so small in my arms.

Almost delicate.

I knew she could still knock me out if she wanted to, and I trusted that she was capable of taking care of herself. At the same time, I wanted to be the person she could trust to take care of her. The storm continued to rage outside, and I listened as the thunder roared and raged on.

Slowly Heather fell back asleep, her face buried in my chest.

How could I have let her think that she was anything as small as livestock to breed? She was so much more than that. She needed to know that. I kissed her forehead softly and considered just falling back asleep with her. Something she said had rattled me, though, and I felt like sleep was over for the night.

Would I really give up the throne for her?

At the moment, it felt correct to say it, but that would be a betrayal against my father, my uncle, my cousins- the entire kingdom. We were a dwindling species, and unless we did something drastic about it, we were going to vanish. These fated mates were supposed to be a way to boost our population, and one of the cousins was already taken out.

What was going to happen if I didn’t produce heirs either?

I thought hard about this and then looked down at her face, and the answer was so simple.

I’d do anything for her.

Anything.

If that meant not having kids, I’d do it. I wanted children, but I wanted her even more. I couldn’t be sure whether Heather was being serious when she mentioned it or if she was just pushing back against me to test my reaction, but I’d give her what she wanted.

Either no kids or a dozen of them.

Anything.

Lightning flashed again, and the thunder seemed to roll in waves.

It lasted longer than it should have.

The hairs on my neck stood on end like I could sense that something was off.

Those were motorcycles.

A pack of shifters was approaching.

One of them had to be her brother.

I looked down at Heather, and she was so peaceful, I didn’t want to wake her. Slowly letting her go, I set her head on her pillow and slid another pillow into her arms. She wrapped tightly around it, and I suddenly wanted to climb back into bed.

The motors stopped outside, running in the rain and mud, and I knew I had to go down to see what was going on.

Pulling on my clothes, I headed down the stairs and into the garage. I steadied my pulse and calmed my mind, going through all the steps I took before running into war. Hopefully, this wasn’t that type of battle; maybe I could just talk him down and make him understand that what he was doing was hurting her.

Opening the door, I stepped out into the rain and gusting wind.

“You’re the prick fucking my sister?” One man shouted the moment I got out.

“She’s her own person,” I retaliated. “What we do isn’t your business.”

“Fuck you, you don’t get to come in here and act like you’re anything but a murderer.” There was alcohol in the air, and I could tell they’d been drinking. This wasn’t good.

How did he know about my time protecting the kingdom?
