The look on her face killed me.

Horror.

She looked terrified of me.

Frustrated, salivating with the anticipation of his blood filling my mouth, I roared in his face instead.

I’d let him live.

Backing off, I left him in the mud.

Heather was shifted when she arrived, desperately investigating her brother. He slowly stood next to her, shaking off his pride and limping a little. Turning back to human form, I didn’t care that I was naked. I was just furious and yet relieved.

I didn’t kill him.

It would have been so easy to, and if she didn’t come out, then I might have. She was able to stop me. I wasn’t even able to stop myself, but she was. My arm was bleeding freely, and I let the rain wash away what it could while Heather approached me.

I expected her to hate me, to slap me for not de-escalating this better.

What she did surprised me even more.

Wearing the tattered remains of her bathrobe, she hugged me. “Thank you for not killing my brother,” she sobbed. I held her gently, looking over at her brother, who looked ashamed of himself as he shifted back to human form. “I’ve had visions that you killed him at this moment since I was six; you didn’t do it,” she held me so tight. “Thank you, oh my god, thank you.”

The realization of what could have happened made my stomach turn and ache in horror. That’s why Heather’s brother called me a murderer. I could have lost control.

I almost killed her brother.

She knew this was going to happen.

Kissing the side of her head, I took her hand and walked towards her brother. He looked angry, pissed, but most of all, he just looked like some kid who could have still been a teenager. I shook my head at him. “Let’s start fresh,” I offered.

He looked annoyed, but after a glance over at Heather, he nodded.
