He left her at her door with a light kiss on her cheek and he didn’t miss the fact that she held her breath while he did it.

Chapter 3

Peace of Mind

Willa

Thursday, he stopped by my office about half an hour before lunch. I was better prepared for all that was him that time, although I did not expect to see him.

“Hey.” He stuck his head in the door. “You about ready to go for lunch?”

“Um, yeah, but I didn’t know we had plans?”

“We don’t. Want to make some?”

“Uh, okay?”

He smiled. “Be ready in half an hour? Meet me outside?”

“Okay?”

He studied me and I squirmed on the inside. He asked, “Are you asking me?”

“Asking you what?”

“If we’re going out for lunch,” he patiently explained.

“Am I asking you? I thought you were asking me?”

“I am.” He chuckled, low and amused. “Your ‘okay’ sounded more like you were asking if it was okay rather than agreeing to have lunch with me.”

I could feel myself blushing, damn my pasty, pale complexion.

“Try again.” I laughed.

“You want to go out for lunch?” He smiled, the lines fanning out from the corners of his eyes. I wondered how old he was, older than me certainly.

“Sounds great. How about I meet you outside in half an hour?” I grinned.

I had time to go out for lunch before Bex and Olivia were scheduled to arrive.

His laugh rumbled up from his deep chest. “I’ll see you then.” He backed out of my doorway, smiling, as he closed it behind him.

This was interesting. I figured he was going to try to wear me down, or maybe he really did just want to be friends? And what exactly did I want with him? Well, I knew what I wanted, but what were my intentions with him?

I reasoned, once again, that having a workplace romance was counterproductive and out of the question. Add to that the fact that things were heating up between Bex and Rhys? There was no way I would do anything to get in the way of that.

Nevertheless, friendship I could give him. In fact, considering how things had progressed between Bex and Rhys, being friends was inevitable. I admitted to myself that I was drawn to him, and wanted to get to know him better, even as I hoped that my romantic interest in him would wane.

I headed out to the parking lot, still thinking furiously. As soon as I saw him leaning back against his truck, the sun highlighting the lighter shades of blond in his hair, his arms crossed over that wide chest, his long legs encased in his khaki pants stretched out and crossed in front of him, I knew that waning interest was but a remote possibility.

“You okay if I drive?” he asked.

“Yup!”

He followed me around to the passenger side and opened my door, then shut it after me. I liked a man with manners. I couldn’t help but watch him as he rounded the front of his SUV and folded his body into the front seat.

“I don’t think you’d fit in my car,” I mused aloud.
