Junie and I answered at the same time.

I said, “Junie called Lenny.”

Junie said, “Willa’s pregnant.”

Minty’s eyes skittered back and forth between my face and Junie’s. She pointed at me.

“You’re happy.”

I nodded, smiling. Minty clasped her hands to her chest, lifted her chin and laughed out loud.

“I’m so happy for you!” she exclaimed with tears in her eyes.

She gathered me up in her arms and whispered again, “I’m so happy for you.”

I squeezed her back, smiling. After another assessing look into my eyes which was apparently satisfactory, Minty released me, turned to Junie, and opened her arms.

Junie plowed in.

“All right, darling,” Minty cooed. “You’re going to fix it, aren’t you, beautiful?”

Junie nodded against Minty’s chest. Then gently pulled away under Minty’s concerned gaze.

Junie wiped her eyes then poked Minty’s breast.

“You’ve got big bazookas, too. How do you hide them?”

Minty laughed and shook her head.

“You are incorrigible, Junie. It’s one of the things I love most about you.”

Junie turned to me, and said, “It’s true. She’s got big bazookas.”

I looked at Minty’s chest. They looked normal sized to me. I looked up to meet her eyes.

“No, I’m not showing you,” she said serenely, her small smile back in place, her eyes amused. “What’s next?”

Junie and I filled in the rest of the details. Minty wanted in on the doctor’s appointment.

“It’s important you have support until Barrett knows,” she decided.

Monday morning, after Barrett left for work, I called the doctor and she fit me in for an afternoon appointment. I got dressed, texted Junie and Minty the update, including the fact that I would not be in today, then headed over to Mara’s.

Mara sat staring with her eyes wide, watching me, after I told her. Suddenly, she threw her head back and laughed, tears springing from her eyes. She jumped up, grabbed me, and held me close.

“I’m so happy for you,” she sobbed.

“Yeah,” I teased. “You sound happy!”

“I am,” she assured me, pulling away to swipe her palms across her cheeks. “I’m so happy I don’t know what to do with it all. Have you told Barrett?”

“Not yet. Going to the doctor to confirm it today, then I’ll plan out how to tell him.”

Mara studied me, then smiled. “Don’t worry. He’ll be happy. Who have you told? Have you told Bex, yet?”

“Junie knows, Minty knows, I haven’t told Bex yet, she’s next.”

“Let’s get her over here. She’s going to be over the moon!”
