“Got it,” Junie whispered.

My bladder was becoming painfully full.

The tech glanced at me. “You’re getting kind of full. Do you want to let some out?”

“Could I?” I responded hopefully.

“Yes, here,” she handed me a paper towel and a dixie cup. “Fill this up and then come back.”

I looked at the cup. “Fill this up.” I repeated.

“Yes. You can fill that up to release some of the pressure, and then I’ll finish.”

I held the cup up to her. “The force of my pee is going to knock this into the toilet.”

She laughed. “Just do your best. But you’re overly full and I’ve got a bit to go. Then we have to get the doctor back in here.”

When I got back, there was only Mara left.

“I can go, too, if you like?” she asked softly.

“No, no way. I want you here.”

She sat beside me and held my hand while the tech took her measurements. The doctor came back in, looked around, and smiled.

“So. You are her actual sister?”

Mara laughed and nodded. “I am.”

“Okay,” the doctor continued. “Looks like there’s one baby in there, about nine weeks gestation. You’re almost a quarter of the way there. These next four weeks are the most important in determining whether the pregnancy is viable, but there is absolutely nothing on the ultrasound to indicate any sort of problem. I fully expect a healthy baby approximately seven months from now. Your official due date is May 28th.”

I gasped and felt the blood leave my face. The doctor came alert, glancing at Mara, then back at me.

I locked eyes with Mara, and tears streamed down both of our faces.

I smiled.

Redemption.

Chapter 45

Secrets

Barrett

“Thanks for meeting me on such short notice.”

The Copper Kettle was busy for a Monday night, which was good as it afforded them a modicum of privacy. The buzz of conversation, the clamor of dishes, the music that played over the speakers, all served as makeshift privacy walls.

Zale and Rhys watched him from across the table. Zale was still in his suit and Rhys was fresh from the jobsite. They’d met him right away just as he’d requested. He drummed his thumbs on the table. Rhys looked at Zale with a smirk on his face.

“Thor’s nervous,” he chuckled.

Barrett’s gaze swung around to Rhys at the mention of Mara’s new nickname for him.

“Can it, handsome.”

Rhys only grinned. Zale’s face remained impassive.
