“Then I’m heading to Niagara-on-the-Lake to get her ring, but she thinks I’m working with Rhys today. He’ll have my cell phone with him. Don’t let her come looking for me. Keep her busy.”

Junie’s eyes widened. “She wasn’t kidding. You are bossy!”

He tried, and failed, to look apologetic. “Comes out a little more when I’m stressed.”

Junie’s face softened. “Don’t worry, Barrett. We’ve got you.”

He smiled at the thought that Junie’s tiny form had him, and then chuckled to realize it was true.

“I know. I’m grateful.” He turned to walk away, calling over his shoulder, “keep her busy.”

“Aye-aye, Captain!” Junie saluted and scooted back inside.

He was surrounded by feisty, strong, sassy, women.

Things could be worse.

At City Hall he got the license with little fanfare. Even so, sweat was pooling in his armpits and running down his sides. He drummed his thumb against the side of his thigh. He needed to calm down. He was a planner, and if there was one thing he planned for, it was enough time to think things through and get things done properly. And if there was one thing he had no control over in this situation, it was time.

Hopefully, the drive to Niagara would serve to settle him down.

His cell rang. Willa’s name popped up on the display and he picked it up without thinking.

“Hey, curly.”

“Hi, my Viking. What are you doing in my neck of the woods?”

“What?”

“You’re downtown, aren’t you?”

He thought fast. Fucking Friend Finder screwed him. “Yes, I passed by city hall to pick up a permit for Rhys.”

“Oh, okay,” she answered, “Do you have time to stop by?”

This could work in his favor. He could drop off the wallet at the same time.

“I can do that. I’ll see you in a few.”

He disconnected the call and wiped the sweat from his forehead. He was not a good liar.

He walked into the office and didn’t see Willa.

Junie gaped up at him, her mouth hanging open. “She’s in the back.”

“Where’s her purse?”

Junie grabbed the wallet from his hand and slipped it into Willa’s purse just as she and Minty came out of the back room. Willa was glowing. There was no other word for it, happiness radiated off her.

She took one look at him, and concern marred her pretty features. Walking straight into his arms she stared up into his face and smoothed her thumbs across his forehead. Staring into her thunder-and-lightning eyes he felt his world realign. There was no issue here. He had the license, he’d get the ring, and he already had the girl.

He smiled.

Her face relaxed. “Ah, that’s better.”

“You make everything better, curly,” he muttered.

She leaned into him with her hands on his chest and smiled up into his eyes. “Do you have time to go for a coffee?”
