Better. I should be able to make it in by two o’clock.

Only if you’re better. We can always stay late tomorrow to put in some work.

We’ll see how it goes.

Can you send me the little video of the baby? I’m going to tell Barrett tonight.

I’ll send it right now. And I’ll see you around two, three at the latest.

Sounds good and thanks.

I focused my attention on the project spread out over the back table and got to work. Junie came rolling in at exactly a quarter to two, bags from Spuds in her hands.

“I texted Minty,” she said, out of breath, “she said you guys hadn’t eaten yet. You need to eat regularly in your condition!” She admonished. “I brought you chocolate milk to go with your Spuds.”

“Chocolate milk? I can’t say no to chocolate milk, but I’m not sure it goes with Spuds. What kind did you get?”

“Greek,” she waved her hand dismissively, “it’ll be fine.”

Minty ran over to Spud’s to chat with Ruby, leaving Junie and me to eat our lunch.

“So, you’re going to tell him tonight? That’s exciting!”

“Yes,” I smiled happily. “We had a really good night last night and I know this is going to make him so happy. I want to give this to him. I don’t want to wait until Sunday.”

“You don’t want to make it special? You know you only get to tell him he’s going to be a father for the first time once, right?”

A thread of doubt cut through my impatience. I sighed.

“You’re right. I’ll make reservations for dinner tonight. I’ll show him the video!” I exclaimed. “He’ll know exactly what it is!”

I reached for my cell phone to pull it up to look at the tiny heartbeat.

“It’s not here, Junie. Did you send it?”

Junie’s face creased with confusion. “I thought I did. Let me send it again.”

Junie pulled out her cell phone, sent it again and then waited to make sure I got it before putting her phone away again. I played the little heartbeat over and over. I sighed. Happy.

“Have you heard from Lenny?”

She shook her head. “No. I called him again, tried to talk to him, but he’s concerned he will fail me. He insisted I take the week to think things through. He said we’ll talk things through on Sunday.”

“Sunday? I thought he said Friday?” I asked.

Junie jolted. “He did. He did say Friday, initially. But then he said Sunday.”

“That’s weird, isn’t it? Are you sure about him?” I asked.

“Definitely.”

I was happy for her. She’d get her happily ever after with a good guy and I was going to give the best guy the best news. I called the restaurant and made a reservation for eight, then Junie and I put our heads down and worked on her project. Ideas were quickly taking shape.

“I think we’ll pull this off by close Friday, especially at this pace,” I reassured her.

My cell rang and I picked it up looking at the display. Viking calling.
