Minty smirked. “It’s not like I had a whole lot of choice. The man was ready to pick me up bodily and move me out of the way.”

“Still… thank you.”

“You’re welcome, beautiful lady.” She paused and then continued. “I think I should tell you, because I don’t want you to be alarmed or taken by surprise, but you’re going to be kidnapped on Friday morning, around eleven. I’ve arranged for all of us to have a spa day in Toronto and we’ll be going out for dinner and a show. The girls, all of them, want to celebrate your news by looking after you.”

I stood with my mouth hanging open. “Are you serious?”

“Quite serious, Willa. You have people who love you. I hope that this is a good plan?”

My eyes filled. “It’s a beautiful plan, Minty. But how did you know that Junie would finish the project?”

Minty smiled her secret smile. “Because she promised me she would, and she’s a woman of her word.”

“I’m good for Friday. I won’t tell anyone you told me.”

“Excellent.”

“I’m heading to the shelter. Let’s close up shop for the day and I’ll see you in the morning for my kidnapping.”

Chapter 49

Whatever it Takes.

Willa

“Thank God, you’re home!” I said to Barrett when I walked through the door to my apartment that night. “Today was an emotional day!”

Barrett was sitting on the couch, long legs stretched out in front of him, his arms stretched across the back. I stopped and took him in. His position reminded me of a night I’d never forget. He assessed me with that knowing gaze of his and he grinned. I blushed, then laughed.

“You want to sit on my lap, curly?”

I walked over and straddled his lap, cupping my hands around his face.

“I love to sit on your lap, Viking.”

“Should I feed you first?”

“Um…” I thought about it. My stomach growled, loudly and he chuckled.

“Your empty tummy wants dinner,” he asserted.

“It’s not the only body part that’s talking,” I teased.

“Oh, yeah?” He smiled at me with his eyes only, “What else is talking?”

I blushed, then laughed. “You know.”

He ran his hands up my thighs to rest at the juncture between my leg and my hip.

He stroked his thumb back and forth slowly. My breath caught at the warmth in his eyes.

“You love me?” I asked, then froze, shocked that those words came out of my mouth.

He stilled. Waited. I met his eyes and smiled. He smiled back and reached for an errant curl. He wrapped it around his finger and tugged, pulling my mouth to his.

He whispered his answer against my lips, “I do. So much. Thank you for asking.”

“Thank you for loving me,” I whispered back.
