She hauled herself to her feet and scooped up Willa’s phone, noting several notifications on the screen. Alarmed, she unlocked it. There was nothing from Mara or Zale but a whole string of texts from Barrett.

The first one was two hours ago.

Are you okay?

Which Minty noted Willa answered immediately after it came in.

I’m okay.

Immediately following her response, came:

I spoke to Kerry at the shelter, she said you did not look well. Are you sick?

Willa was home on the couch, weeping in Minty’s arms, when that one came through and didn’t answer. They came at fifteen-minute intervals after that:

Do you need anything picked up from the drugstore?

Do you need to see a doctor?

Are you at home?

I called your office. Your partner said you were out for the day. Let me know if you’re okay.

I’m giving you ten more minutes and then I’m plundering and rescuing whether you like it or whether you don’t.

Finally, two minutes ago:

I’m coming and you better fucking be there when I arrive.

Ah, Minty smiled, the Viking had awakened. Excellent. Minty eased her way to the front door, ready to meet Willa’s Viking at the door before he knocked it down.

Chapter 12

May

Barrett

He flew up the stairs and barreled down the hall only to pull himself up short at the door to Willa’s apartment and the sight of the cool, composed, well-dressed woman standing quietly outside her closed door.

“Who are you?” he demanded.

He barely recognized his own voice. Deep normally, it was now almost a growl.

The forty-something woman guarding Willa’s door, there was no other way to describe it, she was guarding, smiled at him serenely and held out a slim, cool hand.

“Hello, I’m Minty. I work with Willa.”

He took her hand in his giant paw, taking care to be extra gentle. He knew how intimidating he looked normally must be multiplied astronomically by his fear, which he had to admit, probably looked a lot like anger.

“Barrett,” his voice had not softened.

She smiled a small smile and released his hand. “Ah, yes, you’re Willa’s Viking.”

He raised startled eyes to her face. “She’s told you about me.”

“Indeed.”

He shook himself, what did it matter? He only needed to get to her. “Is she in there? Is she all right?”
