“I hope you don’t mind but some of the band might join us, Lenny for sure. I’m sorry to say he got a look at you, and he’s all ramped up from performing, so I can’t promise he’ll be on his best behavior.” He winced slightly. “He’s a really great guy, he won’t give you any trouble.”

“Well, let’s hope I don’t give him any trouble either,” Junie quipped just as Lenny plopped himself on the last chair, the one between Junie and Barrett. He leaned back, pitching his chair onto its back legs. Lenny, to Junie’s delight, was the drummer. Junie continued speaking to Barrett, her eyes alight, as they briefly skimmed Lenny top to toe, “but that’s not likely.”

I shook my head, met Barrett’s serious eyes, and laughed.

He introduced Lenny to both of us. Junie didn’t waste any time.

“Is Lenny short for Leonard? Doesn’t seem like a drummer name.”

Lenny’s eyes lit with mirth. “Short for Lennon. It’s Irish, means lover.”

Junie sat back in her chair, a small smile curving her perfect lips. “So, what do you do when you’re not beating your skins?”

Lenny fell forward in his chair, his eyes wide on Junie doing her best imitation of an innocent virgin.

“I’ve been looking for you all my life,” Lenny declared.

Junie levelled him with her gaze, “In my experience, there are two types of men: those who think I’m made of glass and those who want to break me. I’m looking for a third kind.”

“Explain,” he shot back.

“The ones who think I’m made of glass are blinded by my looks and don’t see the real me at all. The ones who want to break me want my looks but not my mouth.”

Lenny winked. “I want your mouth.”

Junie burst out laughing.

“All right.” She dipped her perfect chin at him. “I’m going to give you one tip, this one time only.”

Barrett and I watched the interplay between the two of them, our eyes swiveling back and forth like we were watching a tennis match. His alight with interest, mine with resignation.

I groaned. Junie turned to grin at me and then she turned back to Lenny and gave him a taste of her mouth.

“I don’t have a thigh gap, my ass is a pancake and I’m not interested in doing 1500 squats a day to change that. The first time you suggest I diet, or exercise, will be the last time you see me.” She paused for a breath. “I speak my mind. You’ll never wonder where you stand with me, and neither will anyone else. I’m not interested in hurting anybody’s feelings and I’m never purposefully cruel, but I don’t take any shit and I’m not going to tone it down to make you or anyone else more comfortable.” She smiled evilly, he stared at her, entranced. “I’ve got nice legs and great tits and if you’re a good boy I might let you play with them later.”

Lenny stared at her for a moment longer and she held his eyes, not an ounce of teasing in hers.

Lenny turned to Barrett and said quite seriously, “I’m in love,” before turning back to Junie and repeating himself to her, “I’m in love.”

She put her perfect nose in the air.

“We’ll see.”

I glanced at Barrett. “And you were worried about Lenny misbehaving.”

He smiled, his teeth flashing from behind his beard, making my heart lurch once again and I laughed.

He leaned in, elbows on his knees, his beautiful eyes level with mine.

“Are you enjoying the show?”

“I am.” I felt uncharacteristically shy. “You are, uh, quite a surprise.”

“A good one?” he asked seriously.

“A dangerous one,” I admitted as I tried to bank the heat I knew must be burning in my gaze.

Tracey chose that moment to swing by our table and drop off two bottles of water and two beers for Barrett and Lenny. She already knew their order, and she brought along refills for Junie and me.
