He reached for me and pulled me onto his lap. He wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling my back flush against his wide chest and I felt him breathe in deeply.

“Are you, um, going to be too ramped up?”

I felt his body jerk under me. “I’ll rein it in.”

“We could, uh, do it another time?” I suggested nervously.

He chuckled. “Not a chance. Don’t worry, I’ll be all about you.”

I thought about it for a moment. Thought about how comfortable I was being held so tenderly in his arms. Thought about how he held me through my dark night and stayed with me through my dark day. Thought about his sweetness with Olivia and the twins, his care of the animals, his kindness towards Mara. Then I thought about the months leading up to this moment, and the patience he’d never once lost his grip on, and I knew I was ready.

I could give him this. I wanted to give him this.

“You don’t have to rein it all in,” I shifted to see his face. “Please don’t rein it all in. I want you, the real you.”

His beautiful eyes, just a swirl of indistinguishable color in the low light, stared directly into mine and he responded gruffly, “I’ll give you me. We’ll go slow, but I’ll give you me.”

I felt him harden beneath me. “Uhm…”

He shifted me to the side slightly. “Give me a minute and then you better sit over on your chair.”

I gifted him a smile full of feminine power and satisfaction and his eyes lit up. “Maybe it’s me who’s not ready for you,” he murmured.

“You want to wait?” I teased, smiling.

“Nope.”

I laughed. He nabbed his beer and brought it to his lips for a long drink. I

watched, fascinated at the workings of his throat as he swallowed and then I moved to my own chair.

“Are you guys sticking around for drinks after the show?” Sarah’s sultry voice broke in.

I hadn’t even seen her walk up to us, but now she stood with her arm resting on the back of Barrett’s shoulders.

I looked her up and down.

If anything, she’d gotten sexier since last week.

I glanced at Junie. She did not seem to be quite so enamored with her as the first week. She opened her mouth and Lenny gave her knee a squeeze and whispered something in her ear. Junie shut her mouth but sent him a pissed-off look that had him grinning back at her.

Barrett stood up, forcing Sarah’s arm to fall away, and reached his hand out to me, pulling me out of my chair.

“Willa and I are heading out right after the set.” He offered Sarah his chair. “Would you like to join us? I’ll share a chair with Willa.”

Sarah’s beautiful face tightened. “No, that’s okay. I was just wondering if we were getting together after the show,” she said, her eyes sliding over to me. Whatever she saw on my face seemed to satisfy her and she nodded at Barrett. “Another time.”

“I’m calling a band meeting Monday night,” Barrett growled as Sarah walked away. He literally growled. Some men get that deep growly sound when they’re angry or turned on, but Barrett’s voice did not even sound human at that moment.

Lenny nodded. “I’ll make sure Lucky can make it.”

Junie looked only mildly appeased. I’m not sure how I looked. I do know it took a few minutes of easy banter between the four of us before I was able to relax. Barrett turned his attention back to me. He reached for an errant curl and wrapped it gently around his finger. More curls had escaped my updo throughout the night, he had a lot to choose from.

“Any special requests, Willa?” he asked.

“Hurry,” I said the first thing that came to mind. His eyes darkened in response, and he glared at Lenny.

Junie laughed and Lenny held his hands up, defending himself. “Don’t look at me! I’m not the one who decides the length of the sets!”
