Barrett stood and my eyes traveled up his lean, thickly muscled body, until they met his. He bent low and kissed me. Light, but full of promise.
“Be ready to go when the set is finished,” he directed, and I nodded.
His eyes smiled into mine and he straightened. With one final tug on my curl, he made his way back to the stage.
An eternity later we were cocooned in Barrett’s SUV.
“You want to go to your place or mine?”
“I’ve never been to your place,” I mused.
“Let’s save my place for tomorrow. I don’t want you to have any distractions.”
We were quiet for the rest of the drive, as usual. However, I was not my typical relaxed. We were entering unprecedented territory. There’d be no turning back after this.
“There’s no turning back after this.”
“How do you mean?”
“We won’t be able to be just friends.”
“I passed that turnoff awhile back, Willa.”
“I’m not ruining anything by doing this?”
He reached for my hand. “No, curly, I’m sorry, but a simple friendship is already ruined for us. I honestly don’t think it was ever going to be an option for me. It was out of your hands from the beginning.”
“Yeah?”
He nodded. “Definitely.”
The fact that he understood how much my small family meant to me, and how badly I didn’t want to mess it up, gave me confidence that we were moving in the right direction.
He pulled into a parking spot and twisted to look at me.
“Do you want me to come up?”
“Yes.” I nodded.
“All right, then.”
Chapter 21
Take the Edge Off

He reached into the back seat and grabbed a small duffel bag.
I laughed. “Were you feeling confident?”
He gave me a rare grin, and I wished again that I’d snapped that pic on time when we were on our hike. It was so rare to see him smile full out like that.
“You said on Tuesday you wanted to make time. I went home and packed a bag, so I’d be ready whenever that time came.” He shrugged. “I was a boy scout.”
I laughed again. “Were you really?”
He chuckled as he swung out of the truck. “Of course!”
