“I won’t.”

“Don’t. Because I’ll tell you something else, not that there’s any chance of Barrett wanting to go there, but there is an inverse relationship between her level of crazy and her general attractiveness and that bitch is batshit!”

I laughed out loud. God, I loved Junie.

“All right,” I agreed, “I won’t let her get under my skin.”

“All right,” Junie echoed back.

“Calm down,” I laughed, “you’re all fired up on my behalf. I’m okay.”

She nodded. “You sure? You’re solid?”

I nodded. “I’m solid.”

“Good. You deserve this guy.”

Junie and I had a blast, despite Sarah’s outrageous outfit, and when the break came Barrett and Lenny found us laughing and happy at our table.

Barrett leaned over me, one hand on the back of my chair, one on the table beside me caging me in and kissed me firmly on the mouth. He drew back a few inches and studied my face. He must have approved of whatever he saw there because he sat back with a satisfied nod.

Our server passed by the table, dropping off beer, water, and drinks for Junie and me.

“Great show tonight, fellas.”

They thanked her and Lenny pulled Junie onto his lap. “I missed you. Haven’t seen you since Tuesday, babe.”

Junie hugged him happily. “You’ll have to try harder, then.”

He snuggled into her neck. “I will. Work’s been busy. Next week will be much better, unless you’re busy next week?”

He pulled back to look at her, his full lips tipped up in a smile.

“Normal week for me. I think I can fit you in,” Junie teased.

He smiled until something caught his eye over Junie’s shoulder, and he did a double take.

“Vanessa?”

Junie looked over her shoulder from her perch on Lenny’s lap to find a tall, slim woman with straight, shoulder length, honey blond hair making her way towards them. She turned back to Lenny.

“Who’s that?”

He winced, and then he answered, “My ex-wife.”

Junie’s perfect eyebrows hit her hairline. Before she could respond, Lenny slid her off his lap and stood to greet the blond woman with a hug.

“Vanessa! How are you?”

She laughed, a perfect, tinkly, ladylike laugh like Minty’s, only on her it sounded fake. Junie looked her over, noting the expensive shoes, long tanned legs displayed by her flirty designer dress. It was not exactly what one would wear to a bar, but she had to admit that she looked good.

“I’m good! Got into town last night, called your parents, and they told me where to find you!”

“That’s great,” he held onto both of her hands, “how long are you in town for?”

She shrugged her perfectly elegant shoulders. “Not sure. I’ve taken a leave; thought I’d hang out around here for a bit.”

“We’ll have to find time to catch up.”
